• Students will describe safety precautions for extreme weather
• Students will research what them and their family needs to make an emergency kit

MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Computer with printer available
• White Board
• Pre-Saved extreme weather videos with damages (Located in instruction)
• Mouse/headphones
• Weather graphic organizer
• Weather safety checklist
• Pencil
• Notebook

PROCEDURES:
Preparation (Prior to start of lesson):
- Print off Weather packet
- Print graphic organizer
- Print safety checklist
- Pull up severe weather video on white board
- Make sure questions are ready to ask students.

Activating Strategy:
• Ask student what comes to mind when they think of extreme weather?
• Start a discussion about an extreme weather event that happened in your area. (Delaware-
Hurricane Jose September 2017 and tropical storm Michael October 11-12, 2018)
• What is the difference between a hurricane and a tropical storm?
• Ask students to share if they feel comfortable or uncomfortable during a extreme weather
phenomenon.
• Using the white board and teacher computer. Pull up videos of extreme weather and damages that
have happened.

Direct Instruction:

• Today’s lesson will begin with connecting to our pervious thoughts about extreme weather. Ask
students the questions-
- What does extreme weather mean?
- Do you think you are prepared for extreme weather?

Well, we are going to find out!

• After I have asked the question, I will redirect their focus to the white board. We will watch a
short extreme weather video together.

This video will discuss different types of extreme weather in different states. And how you can
prepare for them. And safety concerns that may happen in server weather.

• After watching the short video. The students will pick up their personal computers. The students
are to research 1 extreme weather topic of their choice. Encourage students to pick more than
what the video talked about. For example, wildfires, avalanches, volcanos, sandstorms.

Please give students the weather graphic organizer and safety checklist.

• Students are to explore through different videos, internet searches, books that they chose to help
assist them in finding more information of an extreme weather phenomenon of their choice.
Students should follow the graphic organizer and answer questions to help guide them on their
search.
• Student’s should research different types of safety items they will need during their choice of
extreme weather.

Once students have completed their search. Ask students to please share their findings. Ask the questions.
- What is the difference between (extreme weather) and (extreme weather)?
- What safety measures do (extreme weather) and (extreme weather) have in common?
- What differences in safety measures does (extreme weather) and (extreme weather) have?

Guided Practice:

• While students are doing their personal research. Move throughout the room. Ask questions,
assess students on what they decided to choose. Help them brainstorm different ideas and videos
and techniques that will help critical thinking.

Summarizing Strategy:

• What is severe weather and what risks does it pose to human beings? This lesson plan includes
important facts about severe weather. How to prepare yourself in extreme weather. And safety
kits that work best in different types of extreme weather. Students will share their findings with
peers, as a class we will discuss how each extreme weather phenomenon is different and requires
different safety needs.
