Starter (If not done as a plenary last

lesson): 5 minute Debate

 ‘Do
you think people in the Philippines
were prepared for the typhoon?’
 Spit
into pairs. One of you debate ‘yes’ and
one of you debate ‘no’
 Youmust explain your reasons and support
with specific evidence
Weather Hazards

Task 1: Video Clips
 Watch this clip about Low
pressure (Depressions) and
High pressure systems
(Anticyclones) - it will help
you to understand the type of
weather we get in the UK.
 Alternatively
watch the
weatherbytes dvd on Air
masses, depressions and
anticyclones
Task 2:
 Youwill be given a sheet with a map of the
UK in the middle. It has the rivers and
mountains drawn on.
 Using
pages 36 and 37 in the textbook,
annotate around the map the information
about the different types of extreme
weather the UK experiences.
 You don't need to include everything but key
specific information to support the main
points that help to locate where it happens
is important to include.
Task 3: How can these weather risks be managed? Let's
look at the main ideas for each type of extreme weather.
You'll get a copy of this!
So we know what type of extreme weather events we
get in the UK....but WHY do we???
We know about
this one already
- the spaces

 Work in pairs or 3's with textbooks and a

Kindle/your phone to decide whether your
allocated type of weather is becoming
more extreme or not.
 Youneed to decide yes or no and have a
reason why - it could be a link to an

 WHY?!
 Now read the information from the
textbook page 42 and 43 (you may be
given a copy of the pages if you are short

Homework:
 You will work in groups of 4 to complete
this table. Take 2 each and fill it out within
your group. There is an electronic copy
available if you prefer to type it. You need
to research and fill out the table with the
following criteria:
 Type of weather hazard
 Where it mostly occurs in the UK
 Why?
 Hasit been increasing in
frequency/intensity? Describe how.
 Explain why and include any scientific
theories and/or links to websites/video
clips that help to explain it.
 Youthen need to make sure that your
whole group has a completed table. Your
teacher will then mark it from a group
perspective.
