Lesson Idea Name: Weathering- Chemical vs. Mechanical

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Second Grade

Content Standard Addressed: S2E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how
weather, plants, animals, and humans cause changes to the environment.
a. Ask questions to obtain information about major changes to the environment in your community.
b. Construct an explanation of the causes and effects of a change to the environment in your
community.
Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor
Students critically create a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Selected Technology Tool: BrainPop

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This program is great for Universal Design for learning because it helpful
for all types of learners. It is even helpful for educators as well. For instance, it is easily accessible it is offered
on P.C.’s, Mac’s, and phone devices. It is even designed for all grade, K-12 capable of reaching everyone’s
learning level. What’s also cool about this software it able to benefit ELL students. All anyone needs is a quiet
place and some headphones.

Lesson idea implementation: To begin the lesson the teacher will use BrainPop to introduce the study of
Chemical vs. Mechanical weathering. First asking the students if they have any knowledge on what chemical
and mechanical weathering is? Once, they give the teacher their ideas as a class they will view the BrainPop

video. After the students have seen the video, they will then create and complete a Venn diagram on the
differences and similarities of chemical and mechanical weathering. This will give the teacher an idea if her
students have grasped the subject, and if there are some who still hasn’t completely understood the lesson will
do this next activity. In this activity, students will be required to explore outside the classroom and into the
outdoors. They have to go outside and find examples of chemical and mechanical weathering. For example,
plants growing out of the sidewalks are mechanical weathering and the formation of a cave would be
chemical weathering. This will give them a better understanding of weathering with using real world
examples. After the student has seen the video and done this activity they should be able to define
weathering, types of rocks forms, the cause of weathering, and the differences between chemical/mechanical
weathering.
Reflective Practice: In my opinion, this lesson will impact a student’s learning because it offers the students
the opportunity to have hands-on experiences outside classroom, rather than learning through a lecture.
Helping them to fully grasp the concept of weathering by using a different way of teaching.
