S-I Solution

QNo1:

Solve the inequality and express the solution in interval notation.

x 3+ 3 x 2−4 x ≤0 (1)

Solution: Associated equation of above inequality is

x 3+ 3 x 2−4 x=0 ⟹ x ( x 2 +3 x−4 ) =0 ⟹ x (x−1)( x+ 4)=0

⟹ x=−4 , 0 ,1,are boundaries of intervals on real line.

Now intervals are (−∞ ,−4 ) , (−4 , 0 ) , ( 0,1 ) , ( 1 , ∞ )

Take test point x=−5 ∈ (−∞ ,−4 ) and put in (1) gives−70 ≤ 0 hence satisfied.

This interval is selected.

Take test point x=−1 ∈ (−4 , 0 ) and put in (1) gives6 ≤ 0 hence not satisfied.

This interval is rejected.

Now take test point x=0.5 ∈ ( 0 ,1 ) and put in (1) gives−1.125 ≤ 0 hence satisfied.

This interval is also selected.

Finally take test point x=2 ∈ ( 1 , ∞ ) and put in (1) gives12 ≤0 hence not satisfied.

This interval is also rejected.

Hence Solution set is { (−∞,−4 ) ∪ ( 0,1 ) }

QNo2:

Determine the domain and the range of the given function. Also sketch the graph.

3
f ( x )=
¿ x∨−x

Solution: Now to find domain of f ( x ) , denominator ≠ 0⟹∨x∨≠ x,

Hence Domain (f )=(−∞ , 0)

For range find following limits lim f ( x ) = lim =0
x→−∞ x →− ∞ ¿ x∨−x

lim ¿

x→ 0 f ( x ) = lim ¿¿
−¿ 3
x →0 =∞ ¿
¿ x∨−x

Hence Range ( f ) =( 0 , ∞ ) .

Solution:

sin ( x2 )−sin ⁡( 2x )cos (3 x) =lim sin ( x2 )(1−cos ( 3 x )) = 9 lim sin ( x2 ) lim sin (3 x) = 9 lim sin ( x2 ) lim sin ⁡(3 x

QNO5:

By using the definition of continuity decide whether the function is continuous at x=3.

Also sketch the graph.
