UNIT SUMMARY 1
In unit 1 we know that safety rules are very important to protect our bodies both in
industry and in the laboratory. In the safety code, we know how to operate the equipment,
how to handle poisons, corrosive or toxic materials and how to protect the eyes from
chemical splashes. So that we can become competent people in industrial chemistry

instructions for operating the equipment and it is expected to understand the potential hazards
when operating the equipment. And then students must be supervised by competent staff
while in the laboratory. students are prohibited from carrying out experimental procedures
unless they are competent to do so. Do not allow food to be brought or consumed in the
laboratory so that there is no mistake at what time it is in the laboratory. Never bring food
and drink with you and never use a beaker as a drinking container.

we know that one of the chemicals mentioned is mercury. mercury in Indonesian is "Air
Raksa. Mercury, is toxic or can give off toxic fumes, so wear protective clothing to prevent
mercury from spilling. Clean up spills immediately and ventilate the area thoroughly using
extraction equipment. Toxic materials should be stored in a locked cupboard. always wear
glasses to avoid the risk of being exposed to toxic materials

PAGE 3
on page 3 we have several questions whose answers are in reading

PAGE 4
On page 4 there are several laboratory equipment then we are asked to explain the function of
these tools
Page 5
on page 5 there are some vocab that must be considered and learned. there is also a task to
complete the correct vocab

Page 6
on page 6 there are some questions and those of us who already understand must answer
these questions correctly

Page 7
On page 7 there are some questions that you have to work on in pairs. Those questions about
the laboratory

Answer the following question without looking back at the passage.

1. How do you protect your eyes when you work in a laboratory? Name two steps.
A. Must wear safety goggles
B. Never look directly at a strong source
2. Where must you store a large quantity of inflammable liquids?
Locked cupboard
3. What equipment must be available to handle a likely fire?
Fire extinguissher
4. What must you do before making adjustments or doing repairs of electrical equipment?
Turn of all electrical equipmen and wear insulated glove.
5. What must you do when there is spillage on the floor?
Clean up any spillage immediately and ventilate areas thoroughly using extraction
equipment.
6. Can we prepare mixtures for analysis without competent supervision? Why?
Can not because we are not competent in terms of operating laboratory equipment
7. What must you not do when handling glass or fragile items?
Don't Slam and drop
8. What type of vapors does mercury produce?
vapors poisonous
9. KWhen can the step not be reversed when mixing two kinds of substance?
When diluting concentrated acids and alkalis,
10. How do we keep toxic materials?
Poisons and very toxic materials must be kept in a locked cupboard and checked regularly.
11. What should be considered when operating or testing equipment?
all students must understand the instructions and equipment regulations so that errors
do not occur and must be accompanied by competent staff.
12. What are the risks to our eyes?
Risk may arise from powders, liquids splashes, vapors or splinters. Beware of debris
from fast moving streams.
13. Why do you have to wear glasses?
to protect the eyes from sparks and poisonous liquids
14. What is the prohibition when there is poisonous vapor?
smoking must be forbidden. Notices should be displayed to enforce this.
15. What is prohibited for students when operating equipment?
Do not exceed specified maximum operating conditions (e.g. temperature, pressure, speed
etc.)
16. What are examples of fluids that are critical to operating equipment?
mercury, are poisonous or can give off poisonous vapors.
17. what are the prohibitions when handling corrosive materials?

Do not allow food to be brought or consumed in the laboratory. Never use chemical
beakers as drinking vessels.

Task on function
Describe the functions of the following using one of the patterns above. You may consult your
dictionary.
a goggles
Laboratory glasses are used to protect our eyes from risk the dangers of subtances in
the form of liquid, vapors poisonous. Goggle is equipment to protect the eyes when doing
practice. They are many types of goggles, starting from goggle for swimming, for minus
eyes, for the laboratory, etc.
The function of goggle is :
• Useful as eye protection while working
• Protects the eyes from small particles exemples the dust, radiation, etc
• Protects the eyes from glare like when welding.
GLOVES
Glove is equipment to protect the hand when doing pratice. They are many types of
glove . Gloves are made of different materials: From rubber, plastick, and fabric material . The
material and shape of the gloves are adapted to the function of each job.

The function of glove is :

• To protect of hand from the sharp object
• To prever injury while working

Discuss these questions in pairs.

a) What preparations do you make before working in a laboratory?
1. Wearing a laboratory coat, mask, and gloves
2. Tying long hair
3. Do not joke or bring food and drinks
b) What precautions do you take when:
• you work with inflammable materials?
prevent contact between heat or sources of ignition and combustible materials.
• you work acid materials?
the experiment was carried out in a fume hood, pay attention to air circulation in the
work room, don't forget to use a mask and goggle.
• you want to minimize the risk of a fire?
The laboratory room must have a good ventilation system
• you operate a new equipment?
Read and understand the usage procedure carefully before doing the practicum
• you want to avoid electric shock?
wear rubber boots
and hands must be dry
• there is risk of injury to the eyes?
By using goggle
