Lesson: Distinguishing Text-Types According to Purpose:
Classification and Explanation

LESSON CONCEPTS:

Classifying text type is categorizing something or someone into a certain group or system based on certain
characteristics. It is similar to: Category, class, group, grading, rating.

Description text type is a spoken or written representation or account of a person, object, or event. It is similar
to: an account, characteristic, breed, color, illustration, variety or kind.

Explanation text -type according to purpose, answers how and why things happen. It begins with the topic and
describes items related to it using right order.

ACTIVITIES

Read each of the following informational texts and identify its purpose. Write the
Learning Task 1:
answer on the blank using C for Classification, D for Description and E for
Explanation.

_________1. The feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia is held for 7 days in Naga City in the Bicol Region. Thousands
of tourist and devotees flock to the city to join the celebration. On this day, the image is transferred
to the cathedral and is brought back through a river procession.

_________2. Staying healthy is a must these days. With the high cost of medicines and basic health care, it is
important for us to take care of our body to avoid illnesses. Let’s us always remember that prevention is
always better than cure.

__________3. Intramuros Administration was stablished to maintain the walls of Intramuros, to develop it, to regulate
the activities within the walls and to make it as a major tourist attraction.

___________4. Plaza San Luis across historic San Agustin Church is a cultural-cum-commercial complex. It depicts
lifestyles from the 17th to the 19th centuries through art galleries, crafts. shops, restaurants, cafes,
boutiques, hotels and the Casa Manila Museum. Plaza San Luis is a virtual treasure spot waiting to be
discovered.

__________5. The boy was astonished by what he saw inside. Never could he had imagined that, there in the middle
of the desert, existed a tent like this one. The ground was covered with the most beautiful carpets he
had ever walked upon, and from the top of the structure hung lamps of hand-wrought gold, each with a
lighted candle.
