ESSENTIAL UNIT 9 (E09)

(Magnetism and Electromagnetic Induction)

(July 2018)

Unit Statement:
This unit introduces magnets and magnetic fields, and discusses magnetization. It also
introduces the concept of electromagnetic induction and explores the application of
generators, motors, and transformers.

Essential Questions:
What is magnetic force and how is it related to electric force?
How do magnetic fields produce an electric field and vice versa?

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1. The Student Will describe the magnetic field around a permanent magnet and predict
whether magnets will repel or attract each other in given situations. (19.1)

2. TSW illustrate the magnetic field produced by a current in a straight conductor and in
a solenoid. (19.2)

3. TSW use the right-hand rule to determine the direction of the magnetic field in a
current-carrying wire. (19.2)

4. TSW analyze the forces on a charge and current-carrying wire in a magnetic field.
(19.3)

5. TSW describe electromagnetic induction and analyze factors affecting it. (20.1)

6. TSW explain how generators and motors operate and explain the energy conversions
in them. (20.2)

7. TSW explain how transformers operate and solve problems involving step-up and
step-down transformers. (20.3)

8. TSW obtain and communicate information about claims in published materials of the
effects different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation have when absorbed by
matter. (20.4)

Introduced Outcomes: (taught, but not assessed)

1. The Student Will apply Lenz's law and Faraday's law of induction to solve problems
involving induced emf and current. (20.1)

Practiced/Ongoing Outcomes: (ongoing development, but not assessed)

1. The Student Will plan and carry out investigations to analyze how electric and
magnetic fields relate.

2. TSW develop and use models to study electromagnetic waves.

Key Terms and Concepts:

magnetic domain generator rms current

magnetic field alternating current transformer

solenoid back emf electromagnetic radiation

electromagnetic induction mutual inductance photon

Cross-curricular Suggestions:

Writing:
 Research the debate between proponents of ac and dc in the 1880s and 1890s, and the
advantages and disadvantages each side claimed. Decide on the side you support, and
write a proposal for a meeting of businesspeople to obtain funding to build a generator
of the current type you've chosen.

History:
 Research about the Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla controversy and prepare a
presentation for the class.
 Research the debate between the proponents of ac and dc in the 1880s and 1890s and
the advantages and disadvantages each side claimed. Organize a debate with your
classmates to simulate it.

Suggested Inquiry-Based Projects (at least two projects per year should be completed):
 Apply scientific and engineering ideas to build, evaluate, and refine a simple motor
or a generator. Examples of evaluation and refinement could include testing the
device and making adjustments to improve the energy conversion efficiency by it.

Suggested Assessment Tools:

1. Attached rubric or teacher-generated rubric that assesses ALL essential outcomes

(TSWs). An effective rubric is presented and discussed with the student at the
beginning of the unit, referred back to throughout the unit, and used to assess at
the end. Students will collaborate with peers and the teacher to assess mastery of
the unit with final judgment by the teacher.
