Oral Hygiene SOP

Definition :

Is a nursing action performed on patients who are unable to meet the need to care for
their teeth and mouth independently (patients are not aware) or patients who are able to do
it themselves.

Destination: :

1. Prevent infection of gums and teeth


2. Maintain oral comfort.

Tools and Materials :

1. Towels and upholstery.


2. The mouthwash contains:
a. Cooking water/ NaCl.
b. Mouthwash
c. Borax Glycerin.
3. Spatel tongue that has been wrapped in gauze.
4. Cotton sticks.
5. Crooked.
6. Gauze.
7. tweezers or artery clamps.
8. Toothbrush and toothpaste.

Procedure: For Unconscious Patients

A. Pre-interaction Stage
1. Check nurse records, see oral hygiene schedule and client data
2. Hand wash
3. Prepare tools
B. Orientation Stage
1. Greet, identify the client, call the client by name and greet the client's family.
2. Explain the procedure goals to the client (if conscious) and family
3. Give a chance if you have questions
C. Stage of Work
1. Explain the procedure to the client.
2. Wash hands.
3. Adjust the patient's position with the left/right side sleeping position.
4. Place a towel under the patient's chin/cheek.
5. Take tweezers and wrap it with gauze soaked in warm cooking water / listerin
solution.
6. Use a spatula to open your mouth when cleaning your teeth/mouth.
7. Perform cleaning starting from the walls of the oral cavity, gums, teeth and
tongue.
8. Dry with dry sterile gauze.
9. Tidy up the tools used.
10. Wash hands after the procedure.

For patients who are conscious but unable to do it themselves :

1. the procedure to the client.


2. Wash hands.
3. Position the patient in a sitting position
4. Place a towel under the chin.
5. Take tweezers and wrap it with gauze soaked in warm cooking water / listerine
solution.
6. Then clean the mouth area, starting from the walls of the oral cavity, gums, teeth
and tongue. Then rinse with NaCl.
7. solution. For dental care, brush in an up and down motion. Clean up the tools
used
