PERFORMING ORAL CARE

DEFINITION:
_____A good oral care routine is one of the personal things part of our everyday self-care. Oral
hygiene is the practice of keeping one's mouth clean and free of disease and other problems (e.g.
bad breath) by regular brushing of the teeth (dental hygiene) and cleaning between the teeth.___
Oral hygiene is crucial for patients’ health, and a fundamental nursing responsibility.__________

PURPOSE:
_______It is important that oral hygiene be carried out on a regular basis to enable prevention of
dental disease and bad breath._____________________________________________________

• Promote self-esteem and comfort;


• Improve appetite and enjoyment of food and drink, as poor oral hygiene can affect taste;
• Improve social acceptability and social interaction by preventing halitosis.

_Toothbrush, toothpaste, kidney basin, towel, mirror, alcohol, water, gauze, and clean_________
