About Darla Buchanan

Scholarships
The NC State and Winston Salem Colleges of Education are committed to
advancing equity, both for their own campuses and for education systems
everywhere. The majority of College of Education students face financial
challenges in affording their education, which poses barriers in: 1) recruiting
and enrolling underrepresented students, 2) retaining these students in
Education, and 3) helping them to remain in the classroom when paying
back necessary loans on a teacher's salary. For example, eighty-four
percent of black students in the NC State College of Education have
financial need, which feeds a vicious cycle of under-representation for black
teachers in North Carolina schools. Financial need often precludes black
students from pursuing careers in education, which in turn denies black
children the benefits of having black teachers. Through the Darla Buchanan
Scholarships, the NC State and Winston Salem Colleges of Education seek
to break this cycle.

In fall 2021, the first Darla Buchanan Scholarship awarded at WSSU was in
the amount of $3,000.00 a year for two years to a rising junior in the College of
Education. Additionally, $2,500 for ’21 and $2,000.00 for ’22 are being made
available to help graduating students from the College of Education pay for
licensing exams.

The first Darla Buchanan Scholarship awarded at NCSU in fall 2021 is in the
amount of $5,000.00 for four years for an incoming freshman working toward
an elementary credential. Through NCSU’s Day of Commitment, a second
scholarship was awarded in the amount of $3,000.00 for two years for a rising
junior in the College of Education.
