SCOPE OF STANDARD
This document presents the minimum requirements for the design, manufacturing, supply and
installation of HVAC unit heaters for Suncor Firebag Projects.
INTRODUCTION
LOCATION
The HVAC systems will be installed in the Suncor Energy Firebag Facility located
approximately 45 km NE of existing Suncor upgrader plant near Fort McMurray, Alberta,
Canada.
RESPONSIBILITY
Compliance by Contractor with this standard does not relieve Contractor of his responsibility
for furnishing and installing equipment of proper design, mechanically suited for the specified
service conditions.
CONFLICT
Any conflict between this document, codes, standards, regulatory requirements or other
contractual documents shall be brought to Suncor's attention for resolution before proces
TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
“Suncor” means owner or purchaser and is defined as Suncor Energy Inc.
“Contractor’ means vendor, supplier or manufacturer that supplies the materials and
services.
UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
All units of measure shall be reported in the International System of units (SI) in accordance
with CAN/CSA Z234.1-89, Canadian Metric Practice Guide. Dimensions shall be presented
first in SI units followed by the equivalent value in imperial units shown in parentheses.
Where imperial-sized materials such as plate are used (or where imperial dimensions are
controlling), dimensions shall be first specified in SI units (after hard conversion), with
equivalent imperial sizes specified in parentheses. Piping flanges and bolting shall be shown
in imperial units only (i.e. NPS 4).

Any exceptions to this standard shall be made in writing at the time of quotation submission.
Alll exceptions shall be clearly identified and explained in Contractor's proposal. Exceptions
shall be permitted only after Suncor has given written approval.

OPERATING CONDITIONS
Refer to the Site Conditions Data Sheet for outdoor condition and contract for indoor
condition.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL
The noise level of HVAC unit heaters shall meet the requirements of Firebag Projects
standard FB-A-5672.
All unit heaters shall be CSA approved. The Unit heaters located in classified areas shall be
approved for the area in which they are located.
GLYCOL UNIT HEATERS
Cabinet steel shall be coated to avoid corrosion and equipped with adjustable louvers and
suitable mounting kit.
Coils shall be built with steel tube and aluminum fins. Pipe headers shall be schedule 40 steel
with ASME 150# raised face connections. Coils shall be hydrostatically tested to 2070 kPag.
Fans shall be direct drive propeller type, made of aluminum, factory balanced with
anti-corrosive finish and fan guard.
For unclassified buildings, motors shall be totally-enclosed type, continuous duty with builtin
‘overload protection and resilient motor supports.
For electrical classified buildings, the heaters shall be provided with explosion-proof motors
and non-sparking fans.
Air outlets shall be equipped with four-way adjustable louvers for horizontal units and louvered
cone diffusers for vertical units.
Capacity shall be indicated based on 120 °C entering tri-ethylene glycol
Thermostats will be provided by others.
Contractors shall supply Engineered Air or Trane products unless otherwise approved by
Suncor.

6.3 EXPLOSION PROOF ELECTRIC UNIT HEATERS
6.3.1 Cabinet steel shall be coated to avoid corrosion and equipped with adjustable louvers and

6.3.2 Heat exchanger shall be built with steel tubes with aluminum fins. It shall be filled with
ethylene glycol, water and corrosion inhibitors. Heavy-duty immersion heating elements shall
be brazed into a heavy steel bulkhead.
6.3.3 Fan and motor assembly shall be direct drive propeller type, aluminum, factory balanced, with
anti-corrosive finish and fan guard. Fan blades shall be aluminum and non-sparking. Motor
shall be permanently lubricated, thermally protected and explosion proof rated for continuous
duty.
6.3.4 The Heater shall be completely factory wired and tested and enclosed in an explosion proof
enclosure with magnetic contactor, control circuit transformer, printed circuit block with
terminal block and secondary fuse protection. Explosion-proof thermostat will be provided by
others.
6.3.5 Contractor shall supply Ruffneck VacuCore Series products unless otherwise approved by
Suncor.
6.4 NON-EXPLOSION PROOF ELECTRIC UNIT HEATERS
6.4.1 Cabinet steel shall be coated to avoid corrosion and equipped with adjustable louvers and
suitable mounting kit.
6.4.2 Fans shall direct drive propeller type, made of aluminum, factory balanced, with anti-corrosive
finish and fan guard.
6.4.3 Motors shall be totally-enclosed type, continuous duty with built-in overload protection and
resilient motor supports.
6.4.4 Air outlets shall be equipped with four-way adjustable louvers for horizontal units and louvered
cone diffusers for vertical units.
6.4.5 Unit heaters shall be provided with contacts for thermostat installation. Thermostats will be
provided by others.
6.4.6 Contractor shall supply Caloritech or Chromolox products unless otherwise approved by
Suncor.

65 INSTALLATION
6.5.1 _ Installation shall be executed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
6.5.2 All installation work shall be performed in a safe manner and shall be subject to all OSHA
safety requirements.
6.5.3 The following accessories shall be installed for glycol units heaters:
a. ASME 150# Raised Face Connection.
b. Isolation valves on inlets.
c. Balancing valves on outlets.
d. Pressure and temperature test plugs on inlets and outlets.
e. Drain valves at low points.
f. Manual air vent at high points.
6.5.4 _ Final connections to glycol piping shall be made by others.
6.5.5 Unit heaters shall be isolated from structure using rubber-in-shear with 12 mm deflection.
Where necessary, supplementary suspension steel shall be provided.
7.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING
7.0.1 Contractor shall test unit heaters in accordance with FB-R-5632.
8.0 SHIPPING, HANDLING AND STORAGE
8.0.1. Shipping, Handling and Storage of unit heaters shall meet the requirements of Firebag Projects
standard FB-A-5673.
