American English Sounds
nglish is not spelled phonetically. The same sound is spelled several different wavs.
For this reason it is helpfulto assign separate symbols to each sound. The following is
the lnternational Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) system. Iwenty-four (24) consonant symbols.
eleven (11) vowel symbols, and three (3) Symbols representing diphthongs are used to
sounds of American English.

Preface
he American Language Course (ALC) is a comprehensive, multilevel language program
for teaching English for vocational and professional purposes. It is designed primarily

for intensive English language training in a classroom setting, but can easily
