Adverb of Narration

What are adverbs?

• Adverbs provide information about how, where,
when, to what degree, or how often an action
takes place. They modify verbs or adjectives or
other adverbs. They are also used to connect
thoughts (and sentences) to form longer
narratives, such as establishing a chronological
sequence or cause-and-effect relationships.
1. To begin with…
• at first
• back then Well, as I heard it through the
grapevine, at first, we - the fairy tale
• in the beginning characters - were the only ones in this
• one time castle, but one day the cartoonist
drew a torture chamber and a
• in the beginning skeleton, which our authors found
really funny! There is no accounting
• the other day for taste.
• one morning
• one day
• one evening
• back in the day
2. Action in the middle
• Then
Suddenly a skeleton appears in our
• Meanwhile castle and nobody informs us?
See how it is here? Then, of course,
• Next our authors had to explain his presence
• Afterwards and come up with a life story for him.
They've done that in the meantime,
• soon/shortly and now we are both being exploited
to present this dude.
• Suddenly
• Afterwards
• later on
• beforehand
3. Concluding adverbs
• eventually,
Oh well, what can we do? In the
• in the end end, we have to do what they
• at last, last dictate us to do.

• since then
• at the end
Example
• Well, as I heard it through the grapevine, at first,
we - the fairy tale characters - were the only ones
in this castle, but one day the cartoonist drew a
torture chamber and a skeleton, which our
authors found really funny! There is no
accounting for taste.
Evaluation
1. (Back in the day, In the beginning), the
Amazon rainforest constitutes the most living
plants and animals in the world since wet
tropical forests have species-rich biome.
2. (Afterwards, Suddenly), the Brazilian state
of Rondonia has 6,436 fires burning so far this
year in it, according to Brazil's National
Institute for Space Research (INPE).
Evaluation
3. The stark reality of the destruction is otherworldly:
like a vision conjured by an alarmist to warn of what
may come (soon, shortly after), if the world
doesn't address its climate crisis now.
4. The more forest is cleared, (eventually, in the
end) the less moisture is held beneath its canopy,
and the drier the land gets. The drier the land gets,
the more susceptible it is to fire. The more fire, the
less forest. A self-fulfilling cycle has already begun.
Evaluation
5. Yet it is real, and here, and now, and below us
as we are scorched by the sun above and
smoldering land below. (In the end, At last),
it is our responsibility because, (in the first
place, at first), we are the catalyst.
