Introductory Message
Welcome to TLE 10 – AFA (Agricultural Crop Production)!

The TLE 10 – AFA (Agricultural Crop Production) Learning Activity

Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools Division of
Himamaylan City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and
responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K
to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The TLE 10 – AFA (Agricultural Crop Production) Learning Activity

Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide the learners in
accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring
the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 10 – AFA (Agricultural Crop Production) Activity Sheet

will help you facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most
Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face
encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 10 – AFA (Agricultural Crop Production) Activity Sheet is

developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This
learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for
independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed

Identifying Materials for Irrigation Work

I. Learning Competency with Code

Identify required materials, tools, and equipment according to lists

provided and/ or authority’s instructions. (TLE_AFAC9-12IW-IIIa-e-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

Regular supply of water to plants is essential for their growth. Water is life.
Water is one of the most important materials needed by plants to increase yields.
Water is needed by plants during the process of photosynthesis and it can
control weeds. It can be applied artificially in the absence of rainfall.
What is irrigation? Irrigation is the application of water into the soil by
artificial means.

Different Types of Irrigation System

1. Surface irrigation – water is applied to the field in either controlled or
uncontrolled manner.

2. Sprinkler irrigation – the water is applied through pipes with a minimum

amount of losses. It can be used in sloping areas to avoid erosion and in
areas where water is scarce.

3. Drip or trickle irrigation – water is applied continuously at the base of each

plant through plastic tubes.
Materials, tools, and equipment used for irrigation work

Irrigation tools are tools used to design, maintain and repair irrigation
system. Irrigation tools are categorized into two such as drip irrigation tools and
underground irrigation tools.

It is used for removing rocks and digging short

trenches.

Mattock

It is a 3 – 4 inches wide shovel used for digging

narrow ditches in soft soil and removing loose dirt
from a machine-dug trench.
Trenching shovel

A heavy steel bar used for digging or loosening big

stones and sta mps and compact soil.

Tamper bar/digging
bar

Used for digging large holes needed for pipes, valves,

etc.

Round point blade

shovel

Used for back-filling trenches and scraping mud

from sidewalks.
Square point blade
shovel

The simplest and commonly used equipment for

irrigation.
Garden hoses

It is used for cutting PVC pipe.

PVC pipe cutter

A traditional blade used to cut metals and PVC in
tight places.
Hack saw

Used for cutting and stripping insulation of the

control wires when installing irrigation system
equipment.
Wire cutter stripper
