Gas Management in Underground Mining - Hochschild

Introduction
The prevention of accidents and occupational diseases are the pillars that govern Hochschild´s
Culture; In this sense, the health and hygiene area has implemented a gas control
management in all the mine sites where we work, these actions and procedures in our
underground operations have the purpose of providing optimal working conditions,
preventing our employees to the exposure to toxic, considering life, health and integrity first.

The Health and Hygiene department
participates in the weekly planning and
operations control meetings.
In that meetings we expose the air flow
conditions and gas concentration in the
different mining tasks before the weekly
planning of the mining work fronts that
will blast this week in order to be
preventive.

MINING VENTILATION
The following measurements are carried out as air
quality control in the mining work front daily:

• Air flow required by temperature

• Air flow rate required by suspended dust

• Air fLow required by production

• Air flow required by explosives consumption

• Air flow required by diesel equipment

• Air flow required by number of workers

GAS MEASUREMENT
Underground workplaces

Concentrations of gases O2, CO, CH4, CO2 and NO2 are


monitored daily in all the workplaces by the mining
supervisors and hygiene personnel and if the
measurement results are above the allowed limits it is
immediately stopped.
In addition, all the operating personnel that enter in the
mine have a carbon monoxide equipment such as PPEs.
(monogas equipment) This equipment has an alarm if is
out of range.
It is established that they will not be able to work when
the concentration of CO exceeds 25 ppm

Gas Records: GAS MEASUREMENT
We carry a record of the main values ​of the gases, the date IN THE MINE
and time of measurement and the name of the person
who is responsible for the measurement in each
workplace.

Equipment and Vehicles In Mine

The hygiene personnel carry out gas measurements in


GAS MEASUREMENT all combustion equipment (exhaust) on a daily basis
inside the mine to control the concentration and
accumulation of gases in the routes (workings and
main) of the mine: CO and NO2.

GAS MEASUREMENT

• We have measurement
standards based on national
regulations for combustion gas
emissions in the exhaust. Which
are periodically notified to the
staff. Allowed Limits: CO: 500
ppm and NO2: 100 ppm.
• We carry a record of the
measured gas values, the date
and time of measurement and
the name of the person
responsible for the
measurement.
If the equipment exceeds the
limits, it is paralyzed and sent for
maintaining and is able to return
to operation when the values ​are
below the allowed limits.

The company has implemented in each mine site a Laboratory for the
Calibration of Occupational Industrial Hygiene equipment to perform
Data Control and Calibration on-site maintenance and calibration.
