Tutorial 4
BEAMS

1. The bearings at A and B exert only vertical reactions on the shaft shown in fig. 1. Draw the
shear force and bending moment diagrams for the shaft and determine the shear and moment
throughout the shaft as a function of x.

2. The beam is subjected to the uniform distributed load as shown in fig. 2. Draw the shear force
and bending moment diagrams for the beam.

3. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the compound beam shown in fig. 3.

4. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for thesimply supported beam shown in fig. 4.

5. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in fig. 5.

6. A reinforced concrete pier is used to support the stringers for a bridge deck. Draw the shear and
moment diagrams for the pier when it is subjected to the stringer loads shown in fig. 6. Assume
the columns at A and B exert only vertical reactions on the pier.

7. The shaft is supported by a smooth thrust bearing at A and a smooth journal bearing at B as
shown in fig. 7. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the shaft.

8. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam shown in fig. 8. The support at A offers no
resistance to vertical load.
