2. Maintenance During Storage

2.1. Basic Storage Requirements (up to 6 Months)
1. For initial inspection purposes or maintenance tasks during storage, carefully remove
original packaging/crating. Do not destroy or discard packaging materials. Reinstall
packaging after initial inspection and before placing system into storage.
2. Keep system as dry as possible. Prevent moisture from entering protective packaging.
3. Maintain batteries. Refer to Battery Maintenance below.
4. Store system at temperature between -40°C (-40°F) and 65°C (149°F), and at relative
humidity of 40 percent or less, if possible.
5. For liquid fuel systems: Purge all fuel from system before storage.

2.2. Extended Storage Requirements (6 Months or longer)

1. Perform tasks listed under Basic Storage Requirements above.
2. For maintenance tasks during extended storage, carefully remove original
packaging/crating. Do not destroy or discard packaging materials. Reinstall packaging
between maintenance activities while system is in storage. Intake and exhaust sealing
caps for desiccant MUST remain installed during storage, except as necessary to
replace desiccant.
3. If storage time will extend beyond six months, replace desiccant and perform manual
engine rotation check at the beginning of extended storage time. Refer to Desiccant Kit
Replacement Work Instruction (440297) and Locked Rotor Identification Work Instruction
(440289).
4. Replace desiccant and perform manual engine rotation check every 12 months and
whenever intake and exhaust sealing caps are removed. Refer to Desiccant Kit
Replacement Work Instruction (440297) and Locked Rotor Identification Work Instruction
(440289). Note that rotation alone will not prevent sticking from occurring.
5. Keep system as dry as possible. Prevent moisture from entering protective packaging.
6. In high humidity conditions (greater than 60 percent relative humidity continuous long
term), consult with local commercial water damage prevention and remediation providers
to prepare/preserve system(s) for high humidity conditions.

extended system down time or during storage, battery packs will self-discharge and require
periodic recharging (440073).
If possible, do not store battery-equipped systems or battery packs at temperatures above 40°C
(104°F). Battery life may be shortened during long-term storage above this temperature.
Fully charge the battery pack before placing system into storage, at recharge intervals shown in
the table and again when the system is put into or returned to service.
If battery-equipped systems will be stored for 6 months or longer, recharge the battery pack as
shown in the following table. Charging the battery pack during storage will reduce the possibility
of shortened battery life during storage up to one year. Battery life may be reduced during storage
times longer than one year even with proper battery maintenance.
Recharge intervals for battery packs in storage with the battery circuit breaker/isolation switch
OFF depend on ambient storage temperatures. Do not exceed the battery pack recharge intervals
shown in the following table. Recharge intervals also apply to UCB/JUCB batteries stored
unplugged from UCB/JUCB.

Storage Temperature Recharge Interval (Days)

< 20°C (68°F) 180

20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F) 90

30°C (86°F) to 40°C (104°F) 45

40°C (104°F) to 50°C (122°F) 20

50°C (122°F) to 60°C (140°F) 5

The battery circuit breaker acts as an isolation switch to allow battery disconnection for system
service or for long-term system storage. Set battery circuit breaker to OFF under any of the
following conditions:
● while performing microturbine maintenance/service tasks;
● when transporting the microturbine;
● if microturbine will not be operated for a period longer than 14 days.

2.3.1. Sleep Mode

Batteries start the microturbine and produce transient power immediately after start-up when
operating in Stand Alone mode.
They must be recharged more often and maintained at a higher state of charge (SoC) while the
system is in Sleep mode. Ambient storage temperatures determine recharge intervals during
Sleep Mode as specified in the following table.
If battery voltage is 180VDC or less, perform a Grid Connect Idle Recharge at the intervals shown
in the table. If the microturbine cannot be operated, use the Capstone External Battery Charger
(440073, 440276 HazLoc) to recharge the battery pack.

Capstone Turbine Corporation
Maintenance Guide: Capstone C200/C1000 Series Microturbine

NOTE
Recharge intervals in the following table do not apply to UCB/JUCB batteries.

Ambient Temperature Recharge Interval (Days)

< 20°C (68°F) 35

20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F) 22

30°C (86°F) to 40°C (104°F) 15

40°C (104°F) to 50°C (122°F) 10

50°C (122°F) to 60°C (140°F) 7

NOTE
If the system will be in Stand Alone Sleep Mode for more than 5 to 7 days,
disconnect modem (if installed) to avoid UCB/JUCB battery discharge.

2.3.2. Automatic Battery Charge

The microturbine system will maintain the battery pack at approximately 80 percent SoC during
operation. This allows for sourcing and power transient sinking in Stand Alone Mode. After an
OFF command, the system will continue to run and will recharge the battery to at least 95 percent
SoC or for 45 minutes, whichever occurs first.

2.3.3. Equalization Charge

During normal use, battery cell capacity and charge becomes unequal. The microturbine can be
programmed to perform an equalization charge cycle to maintain a consistent charge across all
cells. The time to complete an equalization charge may be up to 4 hours.
Use Capstone Remote Monitoring Software (CRMS) to set charge intervals (see appropriate
CRMS Manual (Table 1).
If the system is not operating or is in storage, and is connected to the electric utility grid, command
a manual equalization charge as follows:

System Data Menu: Enter Password.

From Display Panel  Navigate to:
Stand Alone > Local Batt Chg > Enable: Press Accept

Select Settings: Battery Management

From CRMS/CRMS-APS  Set Equalization Charge slider to Enable

3. General Maintenance Procedures

3.1. General Cleaning and Inspection
During any site visit perform the following:
1. Inspect all enclosure panel/door seals and exhaust stack seal(s)/gasket(s). Ensure all
gaskets are present, intact and that there are no gaps between gaskets and doors.
Replace any damaged seal(s)/gasket(s).
2. Inspect all air intake paths – engine combustion air and electronics cooling air. Remove
dirt and debris, clean air paths as necessary.
3. Inspect all engine exhaust paths. Remove dirt and debris, clean exhaust paths as
necessary.
4. Inspect and remove debris from enclosure interior. Use vacuum cleaner and/or damp,
lint-free cloths as necessary to remove debris.
5. Inspect all fuel system fittings and components for leaks. Tighten fittings, repair leaks,
and/or replace damaged components, as required.
6. Inspect and secure any loose cables and harnesses.
7. Ensure that no cables or flexible conduits rest on either the brake resistors or High
Power Connection Module (HPCM).
8. Inspect surrounding area (3m/10ft radius where possible) for excessive dirt, dust or other
sources of air contamination. Clean surrounding area thoroughly to reduce dirt and dust
intake into microturbine. Refresh gravel at sites where gravel is used to reduce fine
ground-level dirt.
9. Inspect enclosure sides and roof for damage and chipped/peeling paint. Touch up paint
if necessary.

3.2. Site Air Quality, Air Filter and Internal Component

Maintenance
All air contains pollutants. While many of these pollutants are harmless to the microturbine
system, some air-borne substances will or can cause serious engine damage.
Pollutant particles range in size from small chemical and smoke particles (such as suspended
salts, minerals and corrosive compounds) to large substances (such as industrial dusts and
insects).
Environmental and seasonal variations affect air quality. Agricultural activity, natural vegetation
growth (sap, pollen, seeding, etc.), construction, and nearby industrial operations all contribute to
air-borne particulates. High concentrations of these particles is considered adverse air quality.
Capstone provides air filters for standard applications to trap harmful particles in the engine intake
air. Aluminum mesh filters trap particles larger than 15 microns in the enclosure and heatsink air

flow. Engine intake air and enclosure air filters require periodic cleaning or replacement as shown
in the maintenance tables.
Particles will cling to surfaces inside the system enclosure. When mixed with naturally occurring
moisture, this particle buildup may form restrictions to air flow over heatsinks and other
components that rely on cooling air flow. Overheating can occur, and lead to reduced performance
and/or system shutdown or failure. Other electronic and mechanical devices can be adversely
affected by poor air quality. Corrosion, caked-on dirt or discolored component surfaces may be
signs of adverse air quality.

3.2.1. Site-Specific Air Filter Replacement Interval Evaluation

At sites where adverse air quality exists, establish a site-specific air filter and heatsink cleaning
service interval as follows.
1. Establish a site air quality profile for new/newly commissioned systems.
a. Evaluate environmental air for obvious pollutants. Observe any active agricultural,
industrial, heavy construction activity, vehicle exhaust or natural pollution sources
such as bodies of water, large trees, dense insect populations, etc.
b. Create a short written description of obvious site pollutants and save with system
maintenance records.
c. Check engine air filter differential air pressure value (CRMS-Maintenance Edition,
Microturbine Data Window 3, parameter 219) via remote access every 30 days or
750 running hours for one year to establish a seasonal-cyclic baseline for long-term,
routine inspection. A value greater than .289 psia (8” WC) indicates a warning to
replace the filter. A value of .4335 (12” WC) indicates a clogged filter that must be
replaced immediately. When filters are replaced, examine filters carefully and note
filter condition (amount of clogging) and contaminants present. See Figure 1 (CRMS-
Maintenance Edition v5.6 shown; other versions similar).

Figure 1. Engine Air Filter Differential

2. Use site profile information to supplement air filter inspection and replacement intervals
listed in scheduled maintenance tables.
3. Also monitor system for “9043” fault declarations, which may indicate that IGBT heat
sinks are overheating due to contaminant buildup and require cleaning.

4. Fuel System Inspection and Maintenance

4.1. Gaseous Fuel Fittings and Components
Inspect the entire fuel system for leaks according to the maintenance schedule and whenever a
fuel system component is loosened, disconnected or replaced.
1. Inspect all fittings, connections, filters, valves, and gas compressors for leaks, from the
fuel supply inlet into the microturbine. Tighten fittings, repair leaks, and/or replace
damaged components, as required.
2. To leak check upstream of the microturbine internal fuel shutoff valve, check the fuel line
and all fittings for leaks using a leak detector such as Snoop®, soapy water, or a gas
sniffer. Capstone kit 610125-1XX contains Loctite® #567 and instructions for use with
NPT fittings (440147).
3. To check the fuel system downstream of the microturbine internal fuel shutoff valve,
proceed as follows:

ELECTRICAL WARNING
ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Use extreme caution and wear appropriate PPE
(Personal Protective Equipment) when working on energized equipment. Failure
to obey this warning may result in personal injury or death.
a. Start engine.
b. With engine running at idle, use leak detector to check fuel tubes and fittings, fuel
regulator (if installed), fuel filter and manifold connections for leaks. If using a liquid
leak solution, absorb excess liquid with shop towels to ensure no liquid drops onto
the electronic controllers.
c. If a gaseous fuel leak is found, stop the system immediately. Close the main fuel
supply valve. Repair the leak. Tighten fittings to specified torque (440072). Capstone
kit 610125-1XX contains Loctite® #567 and instructions for use with NPT fittings
(440147).
d. If a compression fitting cannot be sealed, do not tighten past specified torque
(440072). Order and install a replacement tube and fitting.
4. After tightening or replacing a fitting, open fuel supply inlet valve, start engine, and
confirm that leak has been repaired.

NOTE
When compressor is operating at 0 kW demanded load, compressor bottom sight
glass must be ½-full and top sight glass must be empty.

5. For LPNG microturbines: Check oil levels in primary oil separator, and add or remove
oil as needed. See note above regarding turbine operation and required oil levels.
6. If a gaseous fuel leak persists, contact Capstone Technical Support.

4.2. Liquid Fuel Fittings and Components

WARNING
FUEL EXPOSURE HAZARD! Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
including fuel-resistant gloves and eye protection when handling fuel system
components. Exposure to liquid fuel may cause skin and eye irritation or injury.
Inspect the entire fuel system for leaks according to the maintenance schedule and whenever a
fuel system component is loosened, disconnected or replaced. Leak check fuel filter housing after
fuel filter inspection.
1. Inspect all fittings, connections, filters, fuel pumps, and valves from the fuel supply inlet
into the microturbine for fuel build-up and/or leaks. Tighten fittings, repair leaks, and/or
replace leaking or damaged components.
2. Check for excessive fuel build-up on surfaces of components and assemblies where fuel
may drip and accumulate. Evidence of fuel leakage may include small liquid puddles or
oily dirt smudges. Tighten fittings and/or replace leaking or damaged components.
3. If a liquid fuel leak persists, contact Capstone Technical Support.
4. Check oil level in air assist compressor.
a. If system is operating, compressor sight-glass should be 1/2 covered by oil. If level is
lower, add oil.
b. If system is not operating, check oil as follows:
i. Make sure compressor vent cycle is complete.
ii. Open test valve to vent pressure from the aftercooler and pipework.
iii. Make sure that compressor pressure gauge indicates 0 psi.
iv. Oil should completely cover sight-glass. If level is lower, add oil.
