Main Battery Replacement
Capstone Model C200 MicroTurbine®/C1000 Series

Purpose and Scope


This document describes the procedure for replacing the main battery on the Capstone
Model C200 microturbine and C1000 Series.
This procedure must be conducted by an Authorized Service Provider (ASP).

Guidelines
Review entire procedure prior to performing. Ensure you have all material, tools/equipment,
and reference documents on hand.
Conduct maintenance in a clean, well-lighted area using normal shop tooling to avoid
damage to delicate components.
Retain all parts removed for use in re-assembly, unless otherwise specified.

Safety Procedures
Become familiar with general safety precautions in the Capstone Model C200 MicroTurbine®
User’s Manual (400008) and Capstone C1000 Series User’s Manual (400024). Follow all
warnings and cautions in this work instruction.

Material Information
The part being replaced is Battery Pack C6X (513182-1XX).

Required Tools and Equipment


Tools/materials required for this procedure are listed below. Refer to Capstone
Recommended Tools (400003) for more detailed requirements and recommendations.
 10 mm socket wrench (for ground nut, front battery mounting bolts on C200, bracket
nuts on C1000)
 13 mm wrench (for C200 panels, rear battery mounting bolts on C200)
 5/16 inch Allen wrench (for C1000 bay doors)
 #2 Phillips-head screwdriver (for cable support bracket screws)
 Flat-head screwdriver (for opening C1000 Controller)
 Pliers (for cable strain-relief nut)
 PC with CRMS Maintenance Edition installed (for C200 configuration)

 PC with CRMS-APS Maintenance Edition installed (for C1000 configuration)


 Lift-assist equipment rated for 750 lbs. or greater (for battery removal)
 Digital multimeter (DMM)
 Personal Protective Equipment
• Mechanic’s gloves with lining
• Dust mask
• Protective coveralls (long sleeves and long pants)
• Safety glasses with side shields

Procedures
1. Prepare for procedure as follows.

ELECTRICAL WARNING
High voltage! Follow Step 1 sub-steps to avoid electrical hazard. Failure to
observe this warning can result in personal injury.

FUEL WARNING
Fuel hazard! Shut off fuel supply. Failure to observe this warning can result
in personal injury, death, and/or equipment damage.

a. For C200 microturbine(s):


(1) Issue Stop command for affected microturbine.
(2) Shut off fuel inlet supply.
(3) Ensure that microturbine chassis remains properly grounded throughout
procedure.
(4) If microturbine is connected to grid, disconnect and lock out from utility in
accordance with local electrical regulations.
(5) If battery packs are installed, turn OFF and lock out main battery pack circuit
breakers.
(6) Fully isolate microturbine from any other power sources (for example, solid state
relays on user communications board).
(7) Wait at least 10 minutes to fully discharge power from the system.
(8) Use DMM to verify that there is no voltage on DC bus and no voltage on high
voltage AC terminal block.

NOTE
Label or color-code cables before disconnecting.

(9) Disconnect battery cables.

HOT SURFACE WARNING


Hot surface! Do not touch ANY parts near engine until TET reads 125⁰
Fahrenheit. Recommended time required to cool engine is at least 8 hours.
Failure to observe this warning can result in personal injury, death, and/or
equipment damage.

NOTE
Call site and have affected engine shut down a minimum of 8 hours prior
to scheduled visit.

b. For C1000 Series:


(1) If system is configured in MultiPac mode, perform the following steps.
i. Set Override Start to FORCED OFF via CRMS-APS.
ii. Once system is in Stand by mode, disable MultiPac via CRMS.
(2) Continue with the following for all C1000 Series systems.
i. Open electrical panel door to access circuit breakers.
ii. Turn OFF and lock out main circuit breaker for affected bay(s).
iii. Turn OFF and lock out auxiliary circuit breaker for affected bay(s).
iv. Open engine-side door on affected bay(s) and prop open.
v. Shut off fuel inlet supply to bay at ball valve located inside bay door.
vi. Ensure that C1000 enclosure remains properly grounded throughout
procedure.
vii. If battery packs are installed in affected bay(s), lock main battery pack
circuit breakers in OFF position.
viii. Fully isolate microturbine from any other power sources (for example, solid
state relays on user communications board).
ix. Wait at least 10 minutes to fully discharge power from the system.
x. Use DMM to verify that there is no voltage on DC bus and no voltage on
LCM AC output.

NOTE
Label or color-code cables before disconnecting.

xi. Disconnect battery cables

2. Remove main battery/batteries from C200 as follows. If service is performed on C1000


Series system, proceed to Step 5.
a. Remove enclosure panel(s) as needed to access main batteries. See Figure 1.

b. Verify that battery circuit breakers are in OFF position and that ALL battery cabling is
disconnected from battery pack(s). See Figure 2.
c. Loosen cable strain-relief nut and slide from bracket.
d. Remove cable support bracket screws (2 per bracket) and remove bracket.

e. Remove mounting bolts from front (2) and rear (2) of battery/batteries. See Figure 3.

HEAVY LIFTING WARNING


Heavy lifting! Use properly-rated lifting device. Failure to observe this
warning can result in personal injury, death, and/or equipment damage.

CAUTION
Make sure that forklift tines do not contact components behind battery
pack(s) if using a forklift to remove batteries. Failure to observe this caution
can result in equipment damage.

f. Slide battery/batteries forward approximately 3 inches.


g. Use appropriate lift-assist equipment to carefully remove battery/batteries from
system.

h. Contact Capstone Customer Service to determine if removed part should be returned


to factory. If yes, Capstone Customer Service will issue Return Material Authorization
(RMA) instructions. If no, dispose of part(s) according to local recycling and/or
environmental regulations.
3. Install new main battery/batteries (513182-1XX) to C200 as follows.
a. Use appropriate lift-assist equipment to install new battery/batteries in place of
removed battery/batteries.
b. Secure battery/batteries with front (2) and rear (2) mounting nuts. See Figure 3.

c. Reconnect battery cables.


d. Reinstall cable support bracket and secure with screws (2).
e. Slide cable strain-relief nut into bracket and secure.
f. Record serial number of new battery/batteries.
4. Configure C200 system as follows.
a. Use DMM to perform isolation test. Check between positive (+) and ground (W),
negative (-) and ground (W), and positive (+) and negative (-). If all measure greater
than 10kΩ, continue procedure.
b. Turn battery circuit breakers ON.
c. Reinstall panels.
d. Reconnect microturbine to power sources.
e. Connect system to PC running CRMS Maintenance Edition.
f. Configure battery PMs. Refer to CRMS Maintenance Edition Technical Reference for
detailed instructions.
g. Proceed to Step 8 to return system to operation.

5. Remove main battery/batteries from C1000 as follows.


a. Open bay door(s) as needed to access engine bay.
b. Verify that battery circuit breakers are in OFF position and that all battery cabling is
disconnected. See Figure 4.
c. Loosen cable strain-relief nut and slide from bracket.
d. Remove bracket nuts and mounting nuts from battery/batteries.
e. Remove cable support bracket screws (2 per bracket) and remove bracket.

HEAVY LIFTING WARNING

f. Use appropriate lift-assist equipment to carefully remove battery/batteries from


system.
g. Contact Capstone Customer Service to determine if removed part should be returned
to factory. If yes, Capstone Customer Service will issue Return Material Authorization
(RMA) instructions. If no, dispose of part(s) according to local recycling and/or
environmental regulations.
6. Install new main battery/batteries (513182-1XX) to C1000 as follows.
a. Use appropriate lift-assist equipment to install new battery/batteries in place of
removed battery/batteries.
b. Secure battery/batteries with nuts (3). See Figure 4.
c. Reconnect battery cables.
d. Reinstall cable support bracket and secure with screws (2).
e. Slide cable strain-relief nut into bracket and secure.
f. Record serial number of new battery/batteries.
7. Configure C1000 Series system as follows.
a. Use DMM to perform isolation test. Check between positive (+) and ground (W),
negative (-) and ground (W), and positive (+) and negative (-). If all measure greater
than 10kΩ, continue procedure.
b. Turn main battery pack circuit breakers ON.
c. At electrical panel, turn main circuit breaker and auxiliary circuit breaker ON for
affected bay(s).
d. Enable C1000 controller.
e. Connect PC running CRMS Maintenance Edition.
f. Configure battery PM(s). Refer to CRMS Maintenance Edition Technical Reference
for detailed instructions.

8. Return system to operation as follows.


a. For C200 microturbine(s):
(1) Re-install panels.
(2) Open system fuel supply.
(3) Issue Start command.
(4) Test system for proper operation.
b. For C1000 Series:
(1) Open fuel inlet supply to bay(s).
(2) Close bay door(s).
(3) If system is configured in MultiPac mode, perform the following steps.
i. Enable MultiPac via CRMS.
ii. Set Override Start to AVAILABLE via CRMS-APS.
(4) Continue with the following for all systems.
i. Test system for proper operation.
