Engine Gaskets

A sealing gasket is a piece that is located between two parts of the engine to achieve a good fit
and avoid the loss or entry of fluids (oil, water, coolant, fuel, etc.). The main function of the
gasket is to guarantee the tightness of the engine and to avoid leakage of liquids or combustion
gases.

Engine gaskets work as:

 seals to maintain pressure
 hold fluids
 Prevent debris from entering the engine.

Types of engine gasket

The engine is divided into three fixed sections: cylinder head, block and crankcase. Each of the
parties uses a type of gasket or sealing liquid. We also find other important gaskets such as
intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump, the oil seal, turbocharger, valve covers, etc.

Gasket Materials

Wide varieties of materials are used in the manufacture of gaskets. This section is aimed at
providing a brief overview of the common materials. For simplicity they are divided into 4 parts.

 Elastomeric materials

 Fibrous materials(Glass, Carbon fibre ,Aramid)

 Other materials(Mica, Flexible graphite)

 Metallic materials (Carbon steel, Titanium, Aluminum and Copper)
