Travel and Tourism Coffee House

Your contributions to coffee house discussions will be worth 15% of your final grade.
Part 1

1) Choose a newspaper article from a reputable daily news service, and needs to
have been written within the past six months. (The Globe and Mail, The National
Post, The Toronto Star, CNN,NY Times) The M.S.S. Learning Commons is an
excellent site to find reliable sources.

2) You will be doing a second article later in the quadmester.

3) The article must be related to one of the units in this course: Environment and
tourism, Culture and tourism, Good and Bad of tourism, or the future of tourism.
Decide which unit it relates to and what type of issue it is.

4) Your article should be a few pages in length (your class mates don’t want to read
a novel), and it should be written at a level that is appropriate for your
classmates (we are not all university professors).

5) Choose an article that will stir up some good discussion points. Topics that are a
bit controversial are always good for this type of discussion. Also keep in mind
what might be interesting to your classmates. Picking a good article is key to a
successful coffee house!

6) Once you have chosen a good article, fill in the following chart that answers Who
What When Where why and How.

7) You will come up with 5 thought provoking questions that you could ask group
members in a coffee house.

1. You will be a member of a group of 5-6 students. This will be your Coffee
House group for the first half of quadmester. In this group, you will be leading
a discussion (chat) of 2 news articles throughout the semester. Your group
members will also be reading your article before the class so they can
contribute to the group discussion in the Coffee House setting. You will have
already filled out the who, what, where…chart and come up with some good
discussion questions.

2. A copy of the article should be sent to your group members via email(and
your teacher) at least 24 hours prior to the day you lead the discussion. This
will give your group members enough time to read the article. GROUP
MEMBERS MUST READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE CLASS.

3. On the day of the Coffee House, each student who is leading a coffee house
will have a chance to share their article summary in an informal Coffee House
setting with the other students in their group. The Coffee House setting is
designed for discussion of the events with your group. You are responsible for
leading the discussion on your article. These discussions will be via a chat
room.

4. Your participation in the discussions will be evaluated. You need to make

meaningful contributions to the discussion that are evident that you have
read and understand the article. (remember our rules of digital citizenship)

5. As the leader of the coffee house it is your responsibility to keep the

discussion going. You can use the questions you prepared ahead of time, but
also be prepared if the discussion goes off in a different direction too.
