Reading part 2: text matching

Read the three texts about sports experiences. For each question, choose the correct answer.
A. Jeanne
We did lots of team sports at school, like football, volleyball and hockey. But I’m not very fast
or strong, so I couldn’t hit or kick a ball hard. Often, members of my team laughed at me, and so
I stopped playing sports as soon as I could because it upset me. But later I learned that you can
get exercise without other people around. Now I sometimes go cycling, swimming and running,
but always on my own. Then no-one can get mad at me when I’m slow!

B. Laura
I used to do every sport I could when I was at school. I loved the exercise, and I also liked being
a member of a team. We had some great times together. We travelled to matches by bus, and had
parties when we won. Then I was in a terrible car accident three years ago, and I hurt my leg. It
still isn’t better.  It’s made me really unhappy. The only sport I can do is fishing, and that’s so
boring! But a friend of mine has suggesting going sailing. It sounds fun, so I think I’ll try that.

C. Thea
I don’t mind team sports. I’m quite good at baseball and cricket, but I prefer doing sports when
there aren’t lots of other people making noise, laughing and telling jokes. That’s why I like
surfing. It’s just me and the sea and a few other people who also like quiet, beautiful places. I
think I would enjoy horse-riding and skiing too, for the same reason, but those sports are
expensive. I already spend a lot travelling to different beaches with my board.

Who doesn’t have enough money to try sports that she’s interested in?
Who plans to try a new sport soon?
Who is unable to do the sports that she enjoyed in the past?
Who only enjoys sports she can do alone?
Who made a lot of friends by doing sports?
Who only enjoys playing sports with others if they aren’t too loud?
Who had unhappy experiences when playing team sports?

Reading part 2, test 2: text matching
Read the three texts about sports experiences. For each question, choose the correct answer.
A. Capital Park
Because it is on a hill, this big park has the best views of the capital. Unfortunately, there are no
train stations near here and buses do not come here often, and it takes almost an hour to walk
here from the city centre. It’s a popular place to come at weekends, when many local people
come to play baseball, basketball and soccer. But on weekdays, there are very few people here.
There’s a small café which sells cheap fast food but it isn’t always open.
B. Cross Park
Not many people know about this little park, but it is one of the loveliest places in the city and
it’s just a two minute walk from an underground station. There are lots of flowers which are
attractive to bees and birds. There are many different types of tree here too, so in the spring,
when they are in flower, and in the autumn, when the leaves turn red, it is very beautiful. There
are plans to build a snack stall in the park soon, but for now, the nearest place to buy food is the
grocery store two streets away.
C. Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park is the largest park in the city. Buses and trams go there from all parts of
the city so it’s popular with both tourists and the people who live here. As a result, it’s busy
every day of the week. There are lots of things to here, especially for families, such as golf,
playgrounds and bicycles for hire. However, sports players no longer come here because a zoo
was built on the football and cricket fields two years ago. There are lots of different restaurants
to choose from, and in the summer, concerts often take place on the outdoor stage.

1. Which park is visited by the most people?

2. Where can you see shows in the evenings?
3. Which park is best for team sports?

Part 3 - comprehension questions

Read the text and then answer questions 1-5.
Different Colours can affect us in many different ways; that’s according to Verity Allen.  In her
new series ‘Colour me Healthy’, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we
work and the choices we make.  They can even change our emotions and even influence how
healthy we are.
‘Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?’ says
Verity.  ‘Our toothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red.  It’s never green.  Why not?  For
some reason we think that blue and white is clean, while we think of green products as being a
bit disgusting.  It’s the same for businesses.  We respect a company which writes its name in blue
or black, but we don’t respect one that uses pink or orange.  People who design new products can
use these ideas to influence what we buy.’
During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each
programme.  She meets people who work in all aspects of the colour industry, from people who
design food packets, to people who name the colours of lipsticks.  Some of the people she meets
clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American ‘Colour
Doctor’ who believes that serious diseases can be cured by the use of coloured lights.  However,
she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice,
with some surprising results.
Overall, it’s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something
new.  But because Verity is goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series,
it’s up to the viewers to make their own decisions about how much they should believe.

Doctors; Part 4 – Meeting Scientists
d. Part 1 – Cleaning Products; Part 2 – Make-up; Part 3 – Clothes; Part 4 – Food

Book Review
"Join Me" by Helen Wheeler and Jackie Townsend
When I first heard that my two favourite authors were going to write a book together, I was
really excited. Now I have read the book, and although I found it enjoyable to read, I think that
of the authors writes better on her own.
The story was a young woman who hires a man to become her boyfriend in order to
get her dream job. She did this after finding out that the boss preferred to hire people
were married or in a relationship as he considered them reliable. But to be honest,
I found the situation rather unbelievable, as I don’t think bosses can select employees that way
these days.  I tell you what happened as that would spoil the story for you. I’ll just
say that I was reading the book, I predicted what would happen. However. my
prediction was wrong, and the ending was a pleasant surprise.

My African Adventure
Last year I saw an advertisement on my social media page. It invited me to climb a mountain in
Africa and raise money for charity at the same time. I love travelling and I want to help people
to, I decided to have a go. I ordered a special pack from the charity gave
me some advice about ways to raise money for my trip. I tried a few different methods. I found
that the effective way was to sell cakes at work.
The trip took place in November. It for one week. I was part of a group of about
twenty people. The charity organized everything for us. I soon found out that the other people in
the group were a lot fitter me. But they were very kind and encouraged me all the
way. I felt really pleased with myself when I finally reached the top of the mountain.
I really enjoyed this trip. I'm going to do something similar next year. I'm thinking
hiking along the Great Wall of China!
