YEAR 8 SCIENCE
2020 - 2021

NAME: ………………………………………… DATE: …………………….

GRADE: 8 PARALLEL: ……………..

TEACHER: John Osborne

POINTS : _______/ 20 GRADE: _______/ 10

READ ALL THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY:

- The Quimester 2 Project consists of the two questions on the following pages,
which include the drawing of a graph, and copying and manipulating information.
- You will need to download these instruction pages as a file and create space in
order to complete the tasks in the file.
- When you have completed the tasks, you should make one pdf copy of the Project
file, containing all the assignments, and send it to:
josborne@liceocampoverde.edu.ec.
- Although this is a Project, the completed file which you submit must all be your
own work.
- Any form of academic dishonesty will be recorded and reported, and will have the
consequences which are established in LOEI.
- Before submitting your work, check carefully that you have completed every
part of the Project.

GRADING (The specific details are given with each question)

 QUESTION 1 (Graph and questions) 11 points

 QUESTION 2 (Evolution of the Peppered moth) 9 points

1 The evolution of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is rapidly becoming a global problem of

huge significance. 700,000 people died last year as a result of having an untreatable bacterial
infection. It is estimated that by 2050, more people will die annually from untreatable
bacterial infections than die from cancer. Such a common bacteria as E. coli, which causes
food poisoning, can no longer be treated in many parts of the world.

Scientists have made the following predictions for some causes of human mortality in the
year 2050:

Table 1

Predicted global
Cause of death mortality 2050
(millions of people)
Anti-bacterial resistant
10.0
infections
Cancer 8.2

Diabetes 1.5

Diarrhoeal disease 1.4

Road traffic accidents 1.2

Measles 0.13

Cholera 0.12
Source: Deaths attributable to AMR every year by 2050.

a) Use graph paper to draw, or create digitally, a graph of the results in Table 1. The graph will
be graded in the following way:
 Choice of best type of graph 1 point
 Choice of correct or best scales for the ‘x’ and ‘y’ axes 2 points
 Axes plotted correct way round 1 point
 Accuracy of plots 2 points
 Labelling and information 2 points
 Holistic judgement 1 point
TOTAL 9 POINTS

(Your graph should be included in the project which you submit. If you draw the graph by
hand, take a good photograph and add it into the project file. If you created the graph digitally,
copy and paste it, or take a screen shot and add it into the project file.)

b) CVD (Cardio-vascular diseases), such as stroke, heart attack and other problems of the
circulatory system, are still predicted to be the leading cause of mortality with perhaps 5
times more people dying from CVD than from antibiotic resistance infections in 2050. Use
the information from Table 1 to calculate how many people are predicted to die from CVD
in the world in 2050.

2 The way in which the distribution of two different varieties of an insect called the
Peppered moth, evolved and changed in northern England in the last 200 years, is
considered a classic example of evolution by natural selection at work.

Study the Powerpoint resource which has been placed on the 8th Grade Science Blog.
There is no need to take notes but go through the ppt at least two times until you
understand the story of the Peppered moth.

Below, you will find the history of the Peppered moth in a muddled series of blocks. They
are not in the correct order. Your task is to assemble the blocks into the correct, numbered
order and add three more blocks by following the instructions at the bottom.
