ROLE OF THE PROJECT SUPERVISORS

In order to avoid conflicts of interests in judging and awarding of grades, a student may
not request that their present teacher of science is the Supervisor for their investigation.
A Supervisor may be any other adult, not necessarily a specialist in the sciences, who
can guide and support a student, make sure that the norms of health and safety are
followed, ensure that the student is responding to the requirements of the project,
including meeting deadlines and the assessment rubric, and who can communicate with
the organisers of the VIRTUAL SCIENCE FAIR at school.

FUNCTIONS OF THE SUPERVISOR

1. Be willing and have the time to support a student through the whole process of
the VIRTUAL SCIENCE FAIR 2020, including forming a research question,
planning and completing an investigation, preparing a Scientific Poster and
making a short video.
2. Ensure that the student is taking no risks or in some way not following norms of
health and safety during the project. Students are encouraged to take the usual
precautions such as wearing safety clothes and goggles during a potentially
hazardous investigation, and disposing of all materials in a hygienic and
environmentally friendly manner.
3. A Supervisor is not expected to be a specialist in the research area, although that
might be the case. The Supervisor may help a student through the project but
must not take a lead role or make significant initiatives. A Supervisor may help
look for resources or suggest materials and otherwise support a student doing a
research project.
4. Be proactive in helping the student follow the rigour of the Scientific Method,
meet deadlines and complete all the requirements of the project, such as decided
in the assessment rubric.
5. Be prepared to regularly communicate with the organisers of the VIRTUAL
SCIENCE FAIR 2020 at Liceo Campoverde, in order to confirm progress or to
resolve difficulties which a student is facing in the project.

The spirit is one of help, guidance and supervision, and also we hope of enjoyment in
sharing in the completion of an original piece of research by a student.
