Year 8 Advanced Science - Chapter 3 Energy in our lives TOTAL:

Multi-Media Assignment and Oral Presentation

Name: __________________________________ /30
AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM OBJECTIVE: Science and technology contribute to finding solutions to a range of contemporary issues; these
solutions may impact on other areas of society and involve ethical considerations (ACSHE135)

INTRODUCTION: In order for us to live the way we do, our society uses energy in many forms. We get this
energy in a number of different ways.

Your task is to work on your own to complete the multi-media task and present an oral
presentation to the class as outlined below.

The title of the Power point presentation is:

“Sources of energy for our world”

You are going to create a Power point presentation that focuses on one source of energy that
our society uses. You will then use the Power point to assist you to present a short oral
presentation to the class. You can focus on any of the following:

Fossil fuels like; Petroleum oil Coal Natural gas

Coal seam gas production Peat

Nuclear energy

Alternative renewable energy sources like; Wind power Wave power

Tidal power Hydro-electricity Solar energy Wood lots

Bio-fuels (ethanol)

Marks scheme:

1. Describe where the energy source comes from. 2

2. Describe how it is “collected” or produced. 2

3. Describe how it is converted to usable energy. 4

4. Explain four advantages of using this energy source. 4

5. Describe four problems with using this energy source. 4

6. Your multi-media assignment must;

Include at least 6 Power point pages. 1
Include diagrams and explanations 1
Be colourful 1
Be informative and interesting 1
You must use your own words 1
Provide at least 3 references 1

7. The oral presentation;

Must be clear and logical 4
You must make eye contact with your audience 2
You must use appropriate body language 1
Use time appropriately (min 1 minute, max 3 minutes) 1

ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD INDICATORS 1 2 3 4 5
Knowledge and Understanding:

q compare physical and chemical changes and use the particle model to
explain and predict the properties and behaviours of substances
q identify different forms of energy and describe how energy transfers and
transformations cause change in simple systems
q compare processes of rock formation, including the time scales involved
q analyse the relationship between structure and function at cell, organ and
body system levels
q examine the different science knowledge used in occupations
q explain how evidence has led to an improved understanding of a scientific
idea
Depth of understanding

q describe situations in which scientists collaborated to generate solutions to

contemporary problems
Extent of knowledge
Sophistication of skills:

q identify and construct questions and problems that they can investigate
scientifically
q consider safety and ethics when planning investigations, including designing
field or experimental methods
q identify variables to be changed, measured and controlled
q construct representations of their data to reveal and analyse patterns and
trends, and use these when justifying their conclusions
q explain how modifications to methods could improve the quality of their
data and apply their own scientific knowledge and investigation findings to
evaluate claims made by others
q use appropriate language and representations to communicate science ideas,
methods and findings in a range of text types

Evidence of learning indicates that the student is:

5 = Well Above
4 = Above the standard
3 = At the standard
2 = Below the standard
