LET’S UNDERSTAND
The Fan Motors
• The purpose of the fan motor is to remove heat from the condenser and to
circulate the room air to the cooling fins of the evaporator in order to control
the temperature, humidity, and cleanliness of the air.
• Types: split-capacitor fan motor and induction or shaded-pole fan motor.
1. Permanent-split Capacitor Fan Motors. PSC fan motors use a running capacitor
connected in series with an auxiliary winding. Both the running capacitor and
auxiliary winding remain in the circuit during the entire operation of the motor. The
auxiliary winding has higher resistance than the running winding. The auxiliary
winding cannot withstand the continuous high current draw, so the running

1
capacitor must be low microfarad to limit the flow of current through the starting
winding.
The PSC fan terminas can be identified through their resistance readings.
The resistance of the auxiliary winding of the PSC fan motor exceeds 50 ohms.it
has multiple speed: one speed,two speed,three speed.
• One speed PSC motor terminals Consist of auxiliary(A),
common(C), and high(H) wire terminals.
• See figure 1.It has three leads and three resistance readings.

Figure 1. schematic diagram of a one-speed PSC fan motor

The three resistance readings are as follows

A and C – highest resistance reading

A and H – second highest resistance reading
C and H – lowest resistance reading

To identify the wire terminals of the fan motor, take the two highest
resistance readings,
A and C – highest resistance reading
A and H – second highest resistance reading

Example:

A one speed fan motor has three resistance readings

Figure 2. Schematic wiring diagram of a one- speed PSC

fan motor with given resistance readings

2
A and C = A + Run #1 = 70 +30 = 100 Ω
A and H = A = 70 = 70 Ω
C and H = Run #1 = 30 = 30 Ω
The two highest readings are as follows:
A and C = 100 Ω
A and H = 70 Ω
Example 2:
Identify the A, C, and H terminals of a one -speed fan motor whose
wires 1,2,3 have the following resistance readings:
1 and 2 = 80Ω
1 and 3 = 40Ω
2 and 3 = 120 Ω
Solution:
The two highest resistance readings are:
2 &3 = 120 Ω
2&1 = 80 Ω
These two highest resistance readings correspond to the following terminals:
A &C ↔2&3
A&H ↔2&1
So, A = 2
C=3
H=1
Now let us draw the diagram

Figure A. Identified terminal leads

The actual wiring diagram is see figure 3.

Figure 3. Actual wiring connection of a one -speed PSC fan motor

2. Two-speed PSC motor terminals.

3
Consist of auxiliary(A), common(C), low (L), and high (H) wire terminals.

See figure 4. The schematic diagram of the two-speed PSC fan motor with
four wire terminals A,C,L, and H is shown.

Figure 4. A two speed PSC fan motor

• Procedure in identifying the A,C,L and H wire terminals of the two-
speed PSC fan motor:
1. Take the six resistance readings using an ohmmeter.
A & C= A + Run #1
A & L = A + Run #2
A&H=A
C & L = Run #1 + Run #2
C & H = Run #1
L & H = Run #2
2. Select only the three highest resistance readings,
A 7 C = highest resistance reading
A & L = Second highest reading
A and H = third highest reading

Example: A two-speed fan motor has six resistance readings

Shown in figure 5.

Figure 5. two speed PSC fan motor

4
A & C = 80 + 40 = 120 Ω
A & L = 80 + 30 = 110 Ω
A & H = 80 = 80 Ω
C & L = 40 + 30 = 70 Ω
C & H 40 = 40 Ω
L&H = 30 Ω

The three highest resistance readings:

A& C = 120 Ω
A & L = 110 Ω
A & H = 80 Ω
Let’s have a sample problem:
Identify the A,C,L, & H wire terminals of a two speed PSC fan motor with the
following resistance readings. Then draw the schematic diagrams of the fan motor.
1 & 2 = 40Ω
1 & 3 = 120 Ω
1 & 4 = 60 Ω
2 & 3 = 110 Ω
2 & 4 = 80 Ω
3& 4 = 150 Ω
Solution: the three highest readings;
3 &4 = 150 Ω A&C
3 & 1 = 120 Ω A&L
3 & 2 = 110 Ω A&H
Therefore A = 3
C=4
L=1
H=2
Draw the schematic diagram:
