I. MELC. COMPETENCY CODE
Explain the operation of a simple electric
motor and generator. S10FE-IIj-54

II OBJECTIVE:
Knowledge Differentiate a generator from motor
Skills Calculate the voltage produced by a generator.

Values/Attitude Perseverance and Integrity

III. SUBJECT MATTER: Operation of simple electric motor and generator.

IV. PROCEDURE:

A.Reading:

A motor is a form of rotating machinery that takes electrical energy and converts it to
mechanical energy through a rotating shaft. Eectrical energy is in the form of AC or DC
voltage and power depending on the motor design.A direct current (DC) motor ia simple
electric motor that uses electricity and a magnetic fiejds to produce torque which turns the
motor. The direction of the mechanical force is given by Fleming’s Left -hand Rule, while the
magnitude can be computed using equation F=IBL sinθ

EXERCISE 1

Direction: TRUE or FALSE

1.DC motor requires two magnets odf opposite polarity and electric coil which acts as
electromagnet.

2.Every motor has a small number of loops of wire that are wound around an ion core.

3.The contact of the brushes passes from one commutator ring to the next , the current
direction is reversed in the middle of each rotation.

4Electrical energy is in form ofb ACorDC voltage and power.

5. The direction of the mechanical force is given by Fleming’s Left -hand Rule , while its
nmagnitude can be computed using the equation F=IBLsin n θ

6 The magnetic flux through an area can change because the field strength is not changing.

7.Change in flux produces an EMF and a current will start flowing in the loop.

8The basic function odf a generator is to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

9. If the coil rotates through 2π radians in one second it will turn at a frequency of two
rotation perb second.

10.The alternating magnetic flux reduces eddy currents in the iron core and causesb
heating.
