101. An installation has a power factor of 74.8 and a kVAR rating of 42.3. What is the VA rating of the installation?

a.53.75KVA c.63.73KVA
b.153.75KVA d.74.8Kva
ANS:  C
The KVAR is the capacitor size of the system which is the vertical of the right angle triangle. (OPP=KVAR)
We need to find the hypotenuse of the right angle triangle (VA). (HYP=VA)
There is only one way that we can solve this question. Power factor is equal to the inverse of cos. The inverse of Cos will
give us the degree of the angle between the horizontal and the hypontenuse which is in this case 41.58 degrees.
Once we figure out the angle then we use the SOH CAH TOA technique and take the Sin of the angle (Opposite over
Hypotenuse)  to find the

Power Factor Angle = cos^-1 ( Power Factor )

= cos^-1(.748)
= 41.58 ^0
Sin (41.58^0)  = .6636

So Sin theta= (OPP/HYP) and therefore

Hyp =(Opp/SinTheta).
Hyp = 42.3 (given) / .6636
Hyp= 63.73 kVA

102. The metering equipment in a plant reads the following: Power Factor 863.2 and the kVAR’s 26.8.  What would the
kVA  and the kW rating of the installation be when the meter reads the above values?
a.39KVA c.25KVA
b.48.3KVA and 40.19KW d.13KVA
ANS:  B
Power Factor Angle = cos^-1  Power Factor = cos^-1  .8632 = 33.69^0
Sin 33.69^0  = .5548
So Sin theta= (OPP/HYP) and therefore
Hyp =(Opp/SinTheta).
Hyp = 26.8 (given) / .5548
Hyp= 48.3 kVA
kW = kVA X Power Factor = 48.3 X .832 = 40.19 kW

plug shall be permitted
to be less than the rating of the overcurrent devices protecting them, but not less than the ampacity of the supply cable
required for the welder.

Explanation:
Rule 42-004 Receptacles and attachment plugs
Portable welders are connected to the electrical supply by means of a receptacle and attachment plug.
Rule 14-600 requires that the maximum overcurrent protection of a receptacle not exceed the ampere
rating of the supply conductor. During start-up of the welding process, however, welders have a high
short-duration inrush current. To prevent nuisance tripping of the overcurrent protection during start-up,
Rule 42-004 permits
the overcurrent protection for a welder receptacle to exceed the branch circuit conductors’ rated
ampacity by a multiple determined by the type of welder. The ampacity of the welder’s branch circuit
conductors is the determining factor in selecting the current-carrying capacity of the receptacle.

to be connected in series to make it to 150V?
a. 14700 ohm c. 20000 ohm
b. 15000 ohm d. 25000 ohm
ANS:  A
3V FOR 300OHM THEN
150V FOR ?(X)
Therefore, X= ((300 X 150)/3)= 15000.
Resistance has to be connected in series so We will need to 14700 ohm(15000-300) to measure 150V.

a. 17300 VA c. 46000 VA
b. 25000 VA d. 74964 VA
ANS:  B
To find the VA on the line (P=VI), we multiply (13800 X 3.14)=43332VA.
To calculate the VA on the phase, we divide by 1.73 (root 3). This equals 25000VA.
361. 4-20 mA transmitter is calibrated to give 0-1200 PSI pressure. At 7ma, what will be the pressure?
a. 175 psi c. 350 psi
b. 225 psi d. 400 psi
ANS: B
We calculate the difference between 1200 and 0 to have a 1200 step scale. We calculate the difference between 20 and 4
to have a 16 step scale. To find the pressure, we divide the 1200 step scale by the 16 step scale. The answer is 75V/ma.
This indicates that the 1200 scale is 75 times bigger than the 16 scale. From the 4 th step to the 7th step is 3 steps so 3 X
75=225V.

362. What is required to into a confined space?

365. A weight transmitter has an input range of 0 Kg to 1000 Kg, using a standard output signal of 4 to 20 mA. If
the weight is at 850 Kg, what is the output signal?
a. 13.6 ma. c. 62.5 Kg.
b. 17.6 ma. d. 250 Kg.
ANS:  B
The 0 Kg to 1000 Kg is a 1000 step scale. The 4 to 20 mA is a 16 step scale. We need to calculate the ratio
of the 16 step scale to the 1000 step scale since the unknown is on the 16 step scale. Therefore,
16/1000=.016. This means the 16 step scale is .016 times smaller than the 1000 step scale. So every time
we climb the 1Kg step scale by one step, we climb the 16 step scale by .016 steps. Since the difference on
the 1000 step scale from 850 Kg to 0Kg is 850Kg, we multiply .016 by 850Kg. the answer is 13.6 ma which is
the distance between 4 ma and the X (unknown).
Since the 4 to 20 ma scale starts at 4ma and not zero,the output signal would READ 13.6 ma plus 4 ma. The answer is
17.6 ma.

a. Low pressure sodium c. Compact Fluorescent
b. High pressure sodium d. Metal halide

Answer D – GTK. Before there were metal halide lamps, there was the mercury vapor lamp. In fact, the
mercury vapor lamp is the first type of HID (high-intensity discharge) lamp to exist.
Mercury vapor lamps offer a number of benefits, including a relatively long lamp life when compared to
traditional incandescents, as well as the capability of emitting very clear, intense white light. This has
made them valuable for a number of applications throughout the years, including overhead lighting in
big areas, like factories and sports arenas, and in areas where bright light adds an element of safety like
streetlights.
As with metal halide lamps, advancements in lighting technologies – mainly fluorescents and LEDs –
have begun to oust mercury vapor lamps from use as these new options many times offer longer-
lasting light, energy savings, and a more environmentally-friendly design.

A pressure transducer is a device that generates an analog electrical signal as a function of the pressure applied. Although
there are various types of pressure transducers, one of the most common is the strain-gage base transducer. The
conversion of pressure into an electrical signal is achieved by the physical deformation of strain gages which are bonded
into the diaphragm of the pressure transducer and wired into a wheatstone bridge configuration. Pressure applied to the
pressure transducer produces a deflection of the diaphragm which introduces strain to the gages. The strain will produce
an electrical resistance change proportional to the pressure.

560. Two 240V heaters, one is 2400w and the other is 1500w. What is the maximum distance away from a panel
board with #10 AWG?
a. 23.4m c. 58.2m
b. 46.8m d. 29.1m
ANS:  B
We use Table D3 since the voltage is low and we are asked about the distance. On the second page of TD3, the

formula is L = (Lt X 3 X (Voltage given/120V)

where L is the length and Lt is the length from the table.
First we need to calculate the Lt and to do that we need to find the amperage. The total power is
(2400W+1500W)=3900W. To find the amperage, we divide the power by the voltage. So (3900/240)=
16.25A.
Using TD3, we need to cover the 16.25 A so we the 20A row and we read across to the number 10
Awg column and we conclude that a number 10 awg with 16.25A on it will take us one way from the panel to

a. 6.6 c. 13.27

ANS:  C
The difference between the 15000kg and 0kg is 15000. This scale has 15000 steps. The
difference between 16ma and 4ma is 12ma. This scale has 12 steps. Since the unknown
variable is on the 12 step scale, we divide the (12/15000)=.0008. This means that for every
step we go up on the 15000 step scale, we go up .0008 steps on the 12 step scale. So the
12 step scale is very small compared to the 15000 step scale. Therefore, to find what the
reading would be on the 12 step scale if the reading on the 15000 step scale is 11587, we
multiply the (.0008 X 11587)=9.27ma and since this scale starts at 4, we need to add

The difference between the 15000kg and 0kg is 15000. This scale has 15000 steps. The
difference between 20ma and 4ma is 16ma. This scale has 16 steps. Since the unknown
variable is on the 16 step scale, we divide the (16/15000)=.001067. This means that for
every step we go up on the 15000 step scale, we go up .001067 steps on the 16 step scale.
So the 16 step scale is very small compared to the 15000 step scale. Therefore, to find
what the reading would be on the 16 step scale if the reading on the 15000 step scale is

577. Given-10 A / 240 Volts UPS. What is the output of the UPS if there is an open circuit
condition due to one cell failure ?
a. 2400VA c. 0V
b. 4800VA d. 1200V

ANS:  C

The input to the primary winding of the transformer (TR1) is 240V. The secondary winding
can be raised up to 15 Volts if the value is at least 12 Volts running 2 amp. The fuse (FS1)
acts as a mini circuit breaker for protection against short circuits, or a defective battery
cell in fact. The presence of electricity will cause the LED 1 to light. The light of LED will set
off upon power outage and the UPS battery will take over.
The most common failure mode of a VRLA battery is an open circuit, due to cell dry-out.
One (1) open circuit condition in a SERIES connected battery system results in insufficient
voltage supply to the UPS DC bus. In a utility outage situation, this will cause the UPS to
shut down on DC under-voltage. Just one (1) cell failure is all it takes.

586. You are getting a liquid to liquid freeze up in a refrigeration circuit. Where would you
install a device to stop this from happening?
a. Compressor c. Fan
b. Evaporator d. Expansion Valve
ANS:  A
The vapor-compression uses a circulating liquid refrigerant as the medium which
absorbs and removes heat from the space to be cooled and subsequently rejects that
heat elsewhere. Figure 1 depicts a typical, single-stage vapor-compression system. All
such systems have four components: a compressor, a condenser, a thermal expansion
valve (also called a throttle valve), and an evaporator. Circulating refrigerant enters the
compressor in the thermodynamic state known as a saturated vapor[2] and is
compressed to a higher pressure, resulting in a higher temperature as well. The hot,
compressed vapor is then in the thermodynamic state known as a superheated vapor
and it is at a temperature and pressure at which it can be condensed with either cooling
water or cooling air. That hot vapor is routed through a condenser where it is cooled and
condensed into a liquid by flowing through a coil or tubes with cool water or cool air
flowing across the coil or tubes. This is where the circulating refrigerant rejects heat from
the system and the rejected heat is carried away by either the water or the air
(whichever may be the case).
The condensed liquid refrigerant, in the thermodynamic state known as a saturated
liquid, is next routed through an expansion valve where it undergoes an abrupt reduction
in pressure. That pressure reduction results in the adiabatic flash evaporation of a part
of the liquid refrigerant. The auto-refrigeration effect of the adiabatic flash evaporation
lowers the temperature of the liquid and vapor refrigerant mixture to where it is colder
than the temperature of the enclosed space to be refrigerated.
The cold mixture is then routed through the coil or tubes in the evaporator. A fan
circulates the warm air in the enclosed space across the coil or tubes carrying the cold
refrigerant liquid and vapor mixture. That warm air evaporates the liquid part of the cold
refrigerant mixture. At the same time, the circulating air is cooled and thus lowers the
temperature of the enclosed space to the desired temperature. The evaporator is where
the circulating refrigerant absorbs and removes heat which is subsequently rejected in
the condenser and transferred elsewhere by the water or air used in the condenser.
To complete the refrigeration cycle, the refrigerant vapor from the evaporator is again a
saturated vapor and is routed back into the compressor.

589. A motor is rotating at 375 rpm and has a frequency of 25Hz. How many pairs of poles does it have?
a. 2 c. 6
b. 4 d. 8
ANS:  B
The key word in this question is how many pair of poles and not how many poles. The
formula is RPM=(120*f)/P. RPM is the speed. f is the frequency. P is the number of poles.
Therefore, we rearrange the formula to solve for P. P=((120f/RPM))=((120×25)/375))=8
poles. The number of pair of poles would be (8/2)=4 poles.

592. During synchronization of an AC generator, abrupt shake occurred. What is the
cause of this?
a. Phase to phase short c. The prime mover
b. Over excitation d. Phase relay failed

ANS:  A
In an alternating current electric power system, synchronization is the process of matching the speed and frequency of a
generator or other source to a running network.
An AC generator cannot deliver power to an electrical grid unless it is running at the same frequency as the network. If
two segments of a grid are disconnected, they cannot exchange AC power again until they are brought back into exact
synchronization. A DC generator can be connected to a power network by adjusting its open-circuit terminal voltage to
match the network voltage by either adjusting its speed or its field excitation.

a. 12m c. 19m
b. 16m d. 24m
ANS:  C
the formula is (Lt X 1 X (Voltage given/120V)=L
Lt from TD3 =9.8 (we can not use the 10a (this is lower than 11.25A) so we use the 10A and reading across the row
to match the number 12 Awg wire,)
(9.8 X 1 X (240/120))=19.6m
From the given choices, C is correct.

Since we are asked about the distance, we can not use tables 1,2,3,4. We need to use
table D3 since the voltage is a low voltage- 240V and table D3 takes the distance into

to the length from the table (Lt) multiplied by voltage drop (same as the table since it is
not given-1%) and then multiplied by (the voltage given divided by 120 always). When we
multiply by the 1%, we only multiply by 1. We do not use the percentage. The formula
translated is L=((LtX1X(240V/120V)). Using table D3 specifically the 10A row, we cross
horizontally to the number 12 conductor and the table indicates that the number 12 will
carry 10A to 9.8m.
Therefore, L=(9.8x1x2)=19.6m. From the given choices, C is correct.

688. A DC motor draws more current with a mechanical load applied to its shaft because the___
A. Counter EMF is reduced with speed c. Applied voltage decreases
b. Voltage differential decreases d. Applied voltage increases

ANS:   A

Answer is A. As the motor speed increases the eddy currents and the resulting counter
EMF also increase. When the motor reaches its maximum operating speed, counter emf
will be generated at a constant rate. When a load is applied, the speed of the motor is
reduced, which reduces the counter emf and hence increases current in the motor. If the
load stops the motor from moving then the current may be high enough to burn out the
motor coil windings.
Generally, the load slows the armature down and so the current increases as the
counter emf is decreased. This produces an increase in current and torque to cope with
the increased load.

689. The resistance of a series diverted motor should be__________

a. A high value c. A low value
b. Equal to the resistance of the series field d. A variable resistor

690. Under compounding is achieved by ___________

A. Adding more turns to the series field c. Adding turns to the shunt field
B.Removing turns from the shunt field d.Removing turns from the series field

ANS:      D
The DC compound motor is a combination of the series motor and the shunt motor. It
has a series field winding that is connected in series with the armature and a shunt field
that is in parallel with the armature. The combination of series and shunt winding allows
the motor to have the torque characteristics of the series motor and the regulated
speed characteristics of the shunt motor. To under compound, we would remove turns
from the series field.

699. What is the minimum size of a TW90 cable needed to feed a delta load 100A if the
ambient temperature is 65c?
a. 100A c. 2 awg
b. 125A d. 00

ANS:    D

We need a conductor to feed a 100A load after it has been derated due to the given
ambient temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. The conductor should carry an extra 125% of
the load. So we multiply (100 X 1.25)=125A. From table 5A, the derating factor is .65. So we
must to take into consideration the extra derating factor. So we would divide 125A by .65
which is equal to 192A. So now the ampacity of the conductors inside the cable is 192A.
Using table 2 and the 90 degree column, the minimum size is 2/00. The reason why we
used the 90 degree column and not rule 4-006 is because the question mentions (to
feed) a delta load (ungrounded load)  which means box to box .

The digit 1 means ON. The digit 0 means OFF. We would divide the digits to four blocks at
a time. From right to left, the pattern is 0011. From right to left the remaining pattern is
0010. We use the 8421 encoding which means for 0011, only the first two digits are turned
ON so we add them (3). For 0010, only the second digit is turned ON so it is number 2 in
the 8421 encoding. So the real number is 23. To convert 23 to binary, we would have a
single string of digital number using the 8421 encoding method of 10111 which means
turning ON from right to left  numbers 1, 2, 4 and 16 for a pattern of 64 32 16 8 4 2 1. Adding
1 plus 2 plus 4 plus 16 would give us 23.

changed. The new sensor would be installed at:
a. The Compressor c. The Condenser
b. The Evaporator d. The Fins

ANS:  A
The temperature sensor of the compressor is at the compressor.
Thermistor Locations & Functions
Refrigerator Section: The refrigerator may have one or two thermistors located in different areas to
monitor the temperature in the refrigerator section. These sensors send their signal to the main control
board, which may turn on/off the compressor or evaporator fan motor, or open/close the air damper to
let more or less cold air into the refrigerator compartment. When one of these sensors fails, it can cause
the temperature to be off or even cause the refrigerator not to run (not very common).
Freezer Section: The freezer section has one thermistor sensor, not including the thermistor on the
evaporator coil. This sensor sends its signal to the main control board which may turn the compressor
on/off or turn the evaporator fan motor on/off. When this sensor fails, it can cause the temperature to be
off or even cause the refrigerator not to run (not very common).
Evaporator Coil: The evaporator coil (located behind the back panel in the freezer section) has one
thermistor sensor attached to the top side of the evaporator coil. The control board monitors this
thermistor and uses it to know when to go in and out of the automatic defrost cycle. Some people ref
er
to this thermistor as the defrost sensor. This is the most common sensor to fail because it is subject to
extreme temperature changes and moisture. When this sensor fails it can cause the refrigerator to not
go through the automatic defrost cycle properly. When replacing this sensor, you must first manually
defrost the evaporator coil to get it caught back up for the refrigerator to continue to work properly
going forward.

710. Without considering how a feed generator work, what should we check after
scheduling a preventive maintenance?
a. Replacing Brushes c. Checking battery condition
b. Replacing air filter d. Check fuel

ANS:  C

Weak or undercharged starting batteries are a common cause of standby power

system failures. The battery must be kept fully charged and well-maintained to avoid
dwindling by regular testing and inspection to know the current status of the battery
and avoid any start-up hitches of the generator. They must also be cleaned; and the
specific gravity and electrolyte levels of the battery checked frequently.
Testing batteries: Merely checking the output voltage of the batteries is not
indicative of their ability to deliver adequate starting power. As batteries age,
their internal resistance to current flow goes up, and the only accurate measure
of terminal voltage must be done under load. On some generators, this indicative
test is performed automatically each time the generator is started. On other
generator sets, use a manual battery load tester to attest the condition of each
starting battery.
Cleaning batteries: Keep the batteries clean by wiping them with a damp cloth
whenever dirt appears excessive. If corrosion is present around the terminals,
remove the battery cables and wash the terminals with a solution of baking soda
and water (¼ lb baking soda to 1 quart of water). Be careful to prevent the solution
from entering the battery cells, and flush the batteries with clean water when

713. In a DC motor, there is excess vibration. How should it be repaired?
a. Reduce the load c. Replacing the bearings
b. Lubricating the bearings d. Replacing the brushes

ANS:  C
Prior to disconnecting the motor and sending it to the shop or a repair facility for
maintenance, a noise and vibration inspection should be conducted. This requires the
motor to be connected to its driven load, energized and operated normally (if possible).
The existence of mechanical noises or vibrations can indicate a variety of problems,
such as mechanical and/or electrical imbalances, misalignments, brush chattering, bad
bearings, bent shafts, mechanically loose windings (shaken lose by excessive vibrations,
for instance) or simply a loose cooling fan or something stuck inside the vents or shroud.
If the windings are loose, after it is disassembled, check for insulation and lead damage.
Vibrations can also be the root cause for excessive heat and brush sparking.
Noises and vibrations are not limited to mechanical problems or imbalances; electrical
imbalances, such as open or shorted windings or uneven airgaps, can cause noises or
vibrations. The easy way to troubleshoot an electrical from a mechanical imbalance is
to first power up the motor, then disconnect power. If the noise/vibration exists while it is
unpowered, the problem is mechanical; if the noise stops while power is disconnected,
the problem is usually electrical.

ANS:  D
A PA system means a Public Address system. The microphone is not close to the
speakers. This is a typical setup at Cayuga speedway. When connecting an 8 Ohm
amplifier and four 2 Ohm speakers, the amplifier is to be in series with the four 2 Ohm

717. What kind of material should be used when cleaning high voltage leads?
a. Soap and water c. Acetone
b. Mineral oil d. Isopropyl alcohol

ANS:  D
Solvent cleaners are used on electrical cables to remove contaminants that could
provide a path over the insulation for tracking. Insulation shield residue, semi-
conducting coating, inhibitor contamination, and other grime from handling are
commonly removed.

Frequently, a failed splice is opened to reveal tracking that follows a “fingerprint pattern”
of contaminants left during handling. An effective cleaning solvent removes such
contaminants to eliminate any electrical path. The solvent itself, of course, must
completely evaporate and not leave any residue of its own.

730. What should be done when replacing type K thermocouple with type J thermocouple?
a.Parallel a resistance with J thermocouple c. Monitor temperature from input
b. Monitor voltage from input d. Recalibrate thermostat
ANS:  B
Thermocouples are the most widely used temperature sensors. They are low cost,
interchangeable, robust and can measure a wide range of temperatures.

Thermocouples basically consist of two dissimilar metals/alloys that when junctioned,

that will generate a small EMF signal if there is a temperature difference between the hot
junction, (measuring junction) and the cold junction or the (reference junction).
The EMF signal will be dependent only on the temperature difference and as such a
thermocouple cannot be tested properly while both junctions are at the same
temperature unless you use a thermocouple indicator.

Although almost any two types of metal can be used to make a thermocouple, a
number of standard types are used because they possess predictable output voltages
and large temperature gradients.
It is essential for the wiring from the thermocouple (cold junction) to the measuring
instrument be in compensating or extension grade material of the same calibration as
errors.

The law of intermediate metals states that a third metal, inserted between the two
dissimilar metals of a thermocouple junction will have no effect provided that the two
junctions are at the same temperature. This law is also important in the construction of
thermocouple junctions. It is acceptable to make a thermocouple junction by soldering
the two metals together as the solder will not affect the reading. In practice,
thermocouple junctions are made by welding the two metals together; this ensures that
the performance is not limited by the melting point of solder.

Thermocouples are available either as bare wire ‘bead’ thermocouples which offer low
cost and fast response times, built into probes or mineral insulated metal sheath (MIMS)
sensors.
A wide variety of probes are available, suitable for different measuring applications
(industrial, scientific, food temperature, medical research etc).
When choosing a thermocouple consideration should be given to both the
thermocouple type, insulation and probe construction. All of these will have an effect on
the measurable temperature range, accuracy and reliability of the readings.

Type K (Chromel / Alumel)

Type K is the ‘general purpose’ thermocouple. It is low cost and, owing to its popularity, it
is available in a wide variety of probes. Thermocouples are available in the -200°C to
+1350°C range. Sensitivity is approx. 41uV/°C. Use type K unless you have a good reason
not to.

b. 6 d. 24

ANS:  B
The 5 ohm resistor on top has a 2A of current flowing through it and it is in series with the 7 ohm resistor which means
the 7 ohm resistor has the same current.
Next we find the voltage across the 7 ohm resistor of 14 V by multiplying the 7 ohms by 2 A. The voltage
across the top 2 resistors is 24V (10 V plus 14 V). Since the top two resistors are in parallel with the bottom 2 row of
resistors, they would have the same voltage source of 24 V.
The 2 ohm resistor at the bottom has 6 V dropped on it (3 A x 2 ohms).
To find the voltage across R1, we subtract 24 V from 6 V which yields 18 V.
We know that R1 has 18 V and 3A across it, then by dividing 18 V by 3A, the value of R1 would be 6 ohms.

798. What is the total impedance Z when trouble shooting a resistor connected to 50 V, 60 Hz source, drawing two
A, and has a coil with an inductance of 0.2 henries and negligible resistance connected in series?
a. 6304.13 c. 75.36
b. 79.4 d. 25
ANS:  B
To calculate the total impedance (Z) of the circuit, we need to consider the resistive component and the inductive component. The total
impedance (Z) can be found using the formula:

Z = √(R^2 + XL ^2)
Given:

Voltage (V) = 50 V

Current (I) = 2 A

Frequency (f) = 60 Hz

Inductance (L) = 0.2 H

First, let's calculate the inductive reactance (XL) using the formula:

XL = 2πfL

XL = 2π * 60 * 0.2

XL = 75.398 ohms

To find R, we can use Ohm's Law:

R=V/I

R = 50 V / 2 A

R = 25 ohms

Now we can substitute the values into the equation:

Z = √(R^2 + XL ^2)

Z = √(25^2 + 75.398^2)

Z = √(625 + 5676.819604)

Z = √6301.819604

Z ≈ 79.37 ohms (rounded to two decimal places)

a. 150 A c. 200 A
b. 175 A d. 225 A
ANS:  B
The rated impedance have nothing to do with this question.
To calculate the primary fusing, we divide the power by 600 v times root 3. So ((150,000 by 1039 )) which equals 144.
P=VI X 1.732
I=P/(V X 1.732)
P=150KVA = 150000 VA
V=600
=150000 / 1039
= 144
Dry type transformers fusing should be multiplied by 1.25. Therefore, 144 times 1.25 is 180 A.
144 X 1.25 = 180
Using table 13, the 180 A is in the range of 176 and 200. We read across this range and the answer is 175A.
