DESIGN PROJECT
FOOTING DESIGN
(ISOLATED FOOTING)
GROUP 2
Declaration:
I declare that this project is our original piece of work and any relevant information obtained
from elsewhere have been referenced;
Design Project Brief:
This project will specify the structural components of a four-story moment resisting frame.
The major component in this project is the design of the footings for the four-story moment
resisting frames. Basically, there are only two different types of footing required to be
designed. One is for the lateral load columns and the other one is for the gravity load
columns. The footing design is based on the columns which are more critical in nature.
Therefore, the rest of the columns will have similar footings as designed for the ones critical
in nature. All work carried is per the Australia and New Zealand standards. The major ones
used are, NZS 3404:1997 for steel and NZS 3101:2006 for concrete.
Problem:
A four-story moment resisting frames requires its footing to be designed. The sizes of the
footing and its reinforcements was to be determined as per the NZS 3404:1997 for steel and
NZS 3101:2006 for concrete.
This project involved modelling of a regular four-story RC perimeter frame building. We
were to work in groups of no more than two persons to analyze a defined building
configuration.
The sketch on the bottom shows a 4-storey concrete ‘perimeter frame’ office building
employing a single moment-resisting bay in each of the perimeter walls. All other internal
and external framing were designed to carry only gravity loading and all beams outside the
braced bays can be considered pin-ended.
Precast floor slabs at each level act as diaphragms and deliver all horizontal loading (wind
and earthquake) to the braced bays in the perimeter frame. It was assumed that floor slabs
themselves did not contribute to lateral stiffness. Hence, we were to consider vertical load
case only. The structure consisted of a 150mm slab for all levels including roof. The office
was to be designed with a floor and roof live load (Q) of 3 and 2kPa respectively.

The first step is to select the types of unit we want in our modelling and to select which
standards we require to model in Etabs. In our case we have used Australia and New Zealand
standard. The main ones were NZS 3404:1997 for steel and NZS 3101:2006 for concrete.
Next is where we select our grid type, and then modify the grid system. We specify the
number and the heights of stories required. After this we select the story 1 and set similar
stories to the other stories.
Then we set our grid system spacings in x and y directions.
Then we actually check in the plan view about the sizes set to the x and y direction is okay or
not.
Then we define the material properties using the appropriate Australia/New Zealand.
We define our Frame Section properties after we have defined the material properties. As
shown in the above picture; is a definition of the gravity columns and its reinforcement details
that is required in the deisgn.
Then we actually define our section properties for the gravity Beam.
Then we define the section properties for both the lateral columns in x and y direction, also
setting up its reinforcements.
As we can see now that the frame section properties have been defined. So we can move to
defining the slab sections now.
After all that then we come to defining our slab properties for floor 1 to 3 which will be same
and the roof to be designed separately since it will be easy to select the section and assign
different live loads as per requirement.
This is the definition of the roof slab section.
Now we can see that both slabs have been defined, so we can proceed with drawing part.
We start from drawing the columns and beams from elevation 1. After 1 is completed then
we go on elevation 2 and so on till elevation 4. The same is done in Y direction from
elevation A to B.
This picture shows all the columns and the beams at respective places according to the design
requirement.
Then we select all the joints and assign pinned or hinge connections at all joints.
The plan view of the structure was as such. This is where we can check the alignments of our
beams and column joints, specially the lateral columns in x and y direction.
Then the slabs of the floors 1-3 and for the roof were drawn.
The complete structure in 3D extruded view had a look as shown in picture above.
After which our load patterns were defined.
Load combinations of the structure was then defined as one in serviceability state (Q+G). The
second load case was for the ULS state (1.2G+1.5Q).
Then slabs were meshed 2m x 2m.
After this we actually assign our shell loads for the floor slab as 3kPa (Live) and 2kPa for the
roof slab(live).
The active degree of freedom was set to 3D, since the model was a 3D structure.
