3.3.3 Net Configuration

After having input the password, you can set the system
parameters. Press <Net Config.> to enter the parameter
setting page shown here below. It contains two parts: one
part is for the line parameter setting; the other one is for
communication parameter setting.

LINE PARAMETERS

Line parameter settings include: line name, line length, line

wave speed (in m/µs), remote substation name, remote line
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 18 of 64

name. These settings are performed on each substation

separately, after having selected it to the left.

IMPORTANT: line name and remote substation name must

be identical to the corresponding names that have been
programmed into the TDU-100 modules.

Once a programming has been completed for one

substation, when the substation at far end is selected, the
program shows the corresponding lines and line lengths.

The wave speed is to be adjusted to the measured value,

after having performed a CB open – close.

The communication setting allows to set the communication

mode. There are three modes that can be selected: Serial,
IP and Dial-up.

With Serial Port communication, we can set the port

number, baud rate, data bit, stop bit and check bit.

COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS

This window changes its appearance next to the selection of

the type of communication.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 19 of 64

Serial (Point to Point) Communication

For the serial communication, you have to input the

following data: PC serial port; baud rate, data bit, check bit,
stop bit. Unless serial port, the other data must match
with the corresponding ones that have been
programmed on TDU-100 or DPS-100.
The programming has to be repeated for each substation
that are connected via serial communication. However,
there is no problem if in one substation (for instance, the
one where the PC is located) the communication is serial
and with another one (for instance, the remote one) the
communication is LAN or dial up.
NOTE: if your PC does not have serial ports, but only USB
ports, you can use one or two USB to serial converters.
When you install the corresponding drivers, the software
asks you to choose the COM serial number of the converter:
please, select numbers not greater than 8, as the TAS
software does not foresee them.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 20 of 64

If you have installed the converter with a COM number

greater than 8, you can modify it as follows:
Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Peripherals
> Ports > Set-up > Advanced. Here you can eventually
change the COM address.

IP COMMUNICATION WITH DPS-100

192.168. 0 .130

For the IP communication, we can set the IP address and

port (with DPS-100), and also the number of unit (with
TDU-100). The default port number is 2404. IMPORTANT:
do not mistake these numbers, as otherwise the
communication would be impossible! In such instance, the
error message is: “Access violation”.

MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 35 of 64

3.4.1 Waveform
In order to study the fault record waveform, you can select
the desired record: three methods are available to enter the
page.
1. Main Menu;
2. Shortcut button;
3. Popup menu from the fault record list: just right click
on the records table; see below.

Pressing <Waveform>, the software will display the

waveform analysis page. You can add notes to the
waveform, selecting <Note>.

: If the chosen fault record has a double-ended

fault location result, it will display the double-ended
waveform page; else, it will display the single-ended
waveform Analysis page.

: The fault record list of the main page cannot be

empty, or the Waveform menu will be gray and could
not be clicked.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 36 of 64

3.4.1.1 Single -ended waveform analysis

page
In this case, it is necessary to focus on one phase, and to
compare the corresponding waveform with the recorded
waveforms of the other phases.

The single-ended analysis is performed as follows.

1. Adjust the filter bandwidth, and observe corresponding
waveform shapes. The filter can be useful to remove the
noise that can conceal the fault waveform.
2. Adjust the line wave velocity in accordance to the actual
condition of the line: more precise locating results can be
obtained.
3. Adjust the waveform gain and proportion to ease the
examination of the waveform characteristics; in
particular, of the fault rising edges where the time
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 37 of 64

measurement is performed.
4. To observe the waveform characteristics of some specific
line, change the displayed lines and phases of the
waveform.
5. Press the <Reset> button: the dashed cursor will return
to the starting point of the traveling wave (i.e. the first
transition of the initial wave).
6. Press the <Zero> button: the dotted cursor will coincide
with the dashed cursor.
7. Move the dotted cursor to the next impulse, and measure
the fault distance.
8. The waveform display background color and
measurement unit of cursor can be changed via the
menu.
9. Three kinds of unit of measurements are available:
microsecond, kilometer, tower number. The latter is
available only after you have input the information of
tower number and associated distance.
10. Three kinds of background color are available:
black, white and gray.
11. Press the <Double Ends> button to switch to the
double-ended waveform analysis page.
12. If you have input the towers data, clicking the
<Tower> button you will go to the tower location
window.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 38 of 64

3.4.1.2 Double -ended Waveform Analysis

Page

1. Purpose of the waveform analysis is to be confirmed, in

case of doubt, that the automatic fault location is
correct.
2. The left side window will display the local substation
waveform, while the right side window will display the
remote substation waveform.
3. On the upper part of the screen are displayed: the
substation names, the line length, the fault time at both
substations, and the corresponding fault distances on
each side, and also the number of the tower where the
fault has occurred. The latter is available only after you
have input the information of tower number and
associated distance.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 39 of 64

4. The waveform velocity can be adjusted to the best

estimate.
5. When the window is opened, the dashed cursor is
located at the edge of the first impulse, while the dotted
cursor is located at the position corresponding to the
computed fault location. At this point is usually visible
an impulse that is the first reflected one. Usually the
cursors are exactly located at the edge of impulses: this
confirms that the fault location is correct. If there is
some superimposed noise, or some other impulses
corresponding to impedance mismatches, it is possible
to perform a further analysis of the recording.
6. Move the mouse to the dashed cursor or to the dotted
cursor: it will be displayed as a left-right arrow. Press
the left button of the mouse and move the cursor left
and right: on the right corner of the window is displayed
the distance between the two cursors (the fault
distance). Reach for the position of the recording that
better corresponds to the edge, and watch the distance
measurement (and the tower number): if the distance
changes more than 300 m (and the tower number
changes), this could be a better location of the fault.
7. Press the <Measure> button and return to the faulty
line display.
8. Press the <Reset> button: the dashed cursor will return
to the starting point of the traveling wave (i.e. the first
transition of the initial wave).
9. Press the <Zero> button: the dotted cursor of the local
substation waveform will coincide with the solid cursor.
10. Press <Single End> button to switch to the single-
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 40 of 64

ended waveform analysis window of the local substation.

11. The waveform display background color and the
measurement unit can be changed via the menu.
Background colors: black, white and gray.
12. The unit of measurement can be microsecond or
kilometer.
13. If you have input the towers data, clicking the <Tower>
button you will go to the tower location window.

3.4.2 Print Waveform

After choosing the fault record, you can print the
corresponding fault waveform. Just like with the waveform
analysis function, the function can be selected in three
ways.
1. Main Menu;
2. Shortcut Button;
3. Popup menu from fault record list.
In this latter instance, select the <Print Waveform> menu:
the software will open the following waveform print page.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 41 of 64

3.5 Communication
Once the system configuration is completed, TDU units are
continuously monitoring the lines they are protecting. If a
fault occurs, fault records can be obtained via the
communication. There is a difference between IP or serial
communic ation and dial-up communication: with the first
two, fault records are automatically transmitted from TDU
to the Master Station, for fault analysis; with the latter one,
it is necessary to perform a manual records download.
However, also with the other communication systems it is
possible to download data from TDU at any time.

3.7 Computer Aided Fault Location

(CAF)
If the communication is working properly, the double-
ended fault location result will be calculated automatically.
The result will be displayed and popped up.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 52 of 64

If we can not get double-ended calculation result for some

reason, we should calculate it manually. That is computer
aided fault location (CAF), it includes: manual calculate and
manual search.

3.7.1 Manual Calculation

If TAS-2100 cannot get the full fault data, you can select
<Input the record time>: the software computes the fault
distance, and also the tower position, if tower data have
been input.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 53 of 64

If you select <Search Record Time>, the software searches

on the system to get the record time.
Selections are the same on both ends of the line; the
computation mode is D.

3.7.2 Manual Search

If some substation doesn’t have installed any TFS-2100
system module, and the neighbor substations have it
installed, we can get the data from the neighboring
substation, and use the manual search function to calculate
the distance to fault.
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 54 of 64

The operation is the following:

1. Choose the local and remote substation.
2. Input the shortest distance between the local and
remote substation, and also designate the velocity.
3. Press <Search>: the software computes the double-
ended fault distance calculation between two designated
substations, and write the result to the corresponding
tables.
4. Choose the fault record and, if the result is correct, you
can press <Save> to save this result.
5. Choose the fault record and press <Waveform>: the
waveform for this record will be displayed.
6. Press <Exit> to exit this page.
7. Press the <Save>: you can enter the notes for later
reference.

4 MAINTENANCE AND
TROUBLESHOOTING

This chapter focuses on the problems you can meet during

the use of the software, and provides solution for the most
common problems.

4.1 Dial-up
1. When you press the <Request> button there is no
response.
Solution: check whether the MODEM is installed, and if
you have programmed the correct Dial Device.

2. The software displays the message <Communication

Terminated Strangely >.
Solution:
1) Check if the drive program of the MODEM is correct
or not, especially if there are more than one MODEM,
and check whether the connection of the MODEM is
correct or not.
2) If the MODEM can dial and you can hear the dial
sound, but this information appears, please check if
the telephone number is correct or not.
3) If the message is displayed during data transmission,
please wait a while and then dial again (To allow the
remote MODEM to restart) .
4) If the message is frequently displayed during data
transmission, usually it is because the bandwidth is not
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 62 of 64

enough or because of strong interference: please

replace the telephone line.

3. The communication is not successful.

Solution: Please contact the substation and ask for the

exact fault start time ; then, use the following formula to
compute the fault distance manually.

If TS and TR are the time s when the traveling wave is

detected at both ends, v is the pulse speed (average
291 m/µs), and L is the line length, the fault distances
XS and XR can be calculated as follows.

XS=[(TS-TR)•v+L]/2
XR=[(TR-TS)•v+L]/2

4.2 Print
When you press < Print>, it doesn’t print.
Solution:
1. Check whether the printer is installed and can be
MSE10171 Rev. 1.2 Page 63 of 64

used normally.
2. Check whether there is paper in the printer.
