Cutler-Hammer has over 50 years of experience in manufacturing a complete line of

Fire Pump Controllers for electric motor-driven centrifugal fire pumps.

These modern, carefully engineered products are manufactured under the most rigid
quality standards to ensure satisfaction and dependable service.

Type FD/FT Electric Fire Pump Controllers are designed for wall and floor mounting and
are available up to 400 Hp at 575 Volts, 3 phase, 60 hertz and up to 300 Hp at 380 Volts,
3 phase, 50 hertz.

Application Criteria
Fire Pump Controllers must be selected to suit each individual application. The following
system specification information must be available to make the right selection.

Motor Horsepower
Determined by the pump manufacturer as the horsepower required to produce a specified
water flow and pressure in the fire protection water system.

Full Voltage or Reduced Voltage Starting

Determined by the engineering consultant and local power company in consideration of
the motor horsepower and the capacity of the power system.

Automatic or Semi-Automatic Controller

Specified by the type of water supply and whether or not the pump room is constantly
attended.

Circuit Breaker Withstand Rating

Determined by the engineering consultant and the local power company on the basis
of available short circuit current at the line terminals of the controller.

Basic Controllers
Full Service
These units provide for automatic start by the pressure switch, manual start by the
START pushbutton or emergency start by the emergency start handle. Stop is manual
by the STOP pushbutton or automatic by the minimum run timer. A remote start push-
button, or other normally open momentary dry contact, can be accommodated. A main
isolating switch, a motor circuit protector with adjustable trips and a voltage surge
arrestor are included.

Limited Service
Limited Service Controllers are similar to full service except there is no isolating switch
and the circuit breaker is a thermal magnetic type with fixed trips. Use of the controllers
is subject to approval by the authority having jurisdiction and/or the insurance underwriter
for the building. They are limited to 30 Hp maximum. Single phase units are available.
The LMR feature is not a standard offering with Limited Service Controllers.

FD20 Limited Service

Limited Service Controllers can be used for motors 30 Hp or less, driving
booster pumps or special fire service pumps where acceptable to the
authority having jurisdiction. These controllers are available for across-
the-line starting only, with starting inrush current approximately 600% of
rated motor full load amperes. The LMR feature is not a standard offering
with limited service controllers.

FD30 Full Voltage – Across-The-Line

Full voltage starting is the most economical and most commonly used
Fire Pump Controller. Full voltage is applied to the motor for starting by
use of a single motor contactor. Starting inrush current is approximately
600% of rated motor full load amperes.

FD40 Reduced Voltage - Part Winding

Where full voltage starting is not applicable, a part winding Fire Pump
Controller reduces starting current by up to 40% while maintaining up to
50% motor starting torque. A special 6 lead single voltage or 12 lead dual
voltage pump motor is required.

FD50 Reduced Voltage - Primary Resistor

Primary resistor type reduced voltage starting is selected when it is
necessary to meet limitations on inrush current. A resistor is inserted in
the power supply to the motor for a soft start and smooth acceleration.
The main contactor by-passes the resistor after a short acceleration time
and applies full voltage to the motor terminals. Starting line current is
65% of the across-the-line starting inrush (i.e. approximately 390% of
rated full load amperes).

FD60 Reduced Voltage - Autotransformer

When closed transition autotransformer reduced voltage type controllers
are selected, an autotransformer is inserted in the power supply to the
motor to reduce the voltage at the motor terminals and to provide a soft
start and smooth acceleration. The main contactor by-passes the auto-
transformer after a short acceleration time and applies full voltage to the
motor terminals. Starting line current is 47% of the across-the-line starting
inrush (i.e. approximately 280% of rated full load amperes).

FD70, FD80 Reduced Voltage -

Wye-Delta Open/Closed Transition
The Wye-Delta starter uses a method of connecting the pump motor windings
into a wye configuration to start, then switching to a delta configuration to run.
This reduces the starting current of the motor significantly. Wye-Delta starting is the
only method that has a starting torque efficiency of 100%. The Fire Pump Controller
is available in open (FD70) or closed (FD80) transition configuration. The FD80 is
shown in the accompanying photo.

FD90 Reduced Voltage - Solid State

The solid state starter provides a step-less, thus smooth current ramp to the motor.
This characteristic eliminates current surges and mechanical torque transients.
A soft stop feature allows for smooth deceleration of the motor thus eliminating
water hammer throughout the cycle. The FD90 will be available fourth quarter, 1998.

FT Series - Automatic Transfer Switch Option

The automatic transfer switch option may be added to any FD Fire Pump Controller
wherever automatic transfer from normal to emergency power is required.
The Automatic Transfer Switch and Fire Pump Controller are interwired and each
mounted in separate enclosures mechanically attached to form one unit.
