Sash Removal
The following steps are suggested to remove and re-install sash in Caradco Double
Hung Windows.
3. Tilt the sash to the interior (90 degrees) and pivot it out of the frame.
To remove the sash cladding, remove the sash stile or rail. Use a stiff smooth tipped putty
knife to pry the small edge staple out. Try to slide the clad off by hand, or continue down
the edge of the clad with the putty knife to pry the cladding off.
To install new cladding, snap the cladding onto the wood using the palm of your hand.
Make sure to place the first edge of the new clad on the weatherstrip side of the sash. Tap
the end tab down with a rubber mallet.
Reglazing Procedures
To reglaze a sash, remove the sash from the window frame, and place it on a work bench.
Remove the four corner screws in the sash. Tap the sash apart with a rubber mallet and a
block of wood.
To avoid splintering due to the paint, always tap in the direction of "A" first to break the paint
seal. Then you can tap in the direction of "B".
WOOD
BLOCK
WITH
CHAMFER
Pull the sash stiles and rails off the glass with hand pressure or light tap of a mallet.
Remove and replace the glazing boot around the new glass.
Put the wood sash parts back around the glazing boot and glass by tapping the
wood with a rubber mallet.
Clamp the sash with a bar clamp and check for squareness by measuring diagonally with a
tape measure.
Caradco has published a separate brochure to cover this topic. It is available from your
Caradco distributor, or by calling Caradco's Service Department. Call 800-238-1866 and ask
for the Homeowners Packet.
2. Lubricating Hardware
The use of WD-40, or other popular lubricant sprays will help maintain the moving hardware
on the window.
