Graduation Oath, Class of 2010

I swear by the things that are sacred to me, before my family, my friends, my colleagues, and my mentors,
that I will keep the following Oath:

I will use my knowledge and training to treat my patients to the best of my ability, with compassion and
kindness and humility.  I will educate my patients to make the health care decisions that are best for them
and, in prescribing treatment, I will respect the cultural and personal beliefs of those entrusted to my care,
even when they differ from my own.

I will be an advocate for the ill and the weak and will strive to balance my responsibilities to individual
patients and to the greater society in promoting the health and well-being of all. Above all, I will do no
harm.

I will work to be worthy of the trust my patients place in me. I will never forget my duty to act in their best
interests and will not exploit that trust.

I will respect the contributions of other professions and treat all members of the health care team with
dignity.

I will understand my own limitations and will work continuously to improve my own medical knowledge
and skills, recognizing my commitment to medicine as a commitment to a lifetime of learning.

I will honor the dedication, the wisdom, and the passion of those who have taught me by teaching others
the art of medicine with the spirit of curiosity and collaboration that the best of my teachers have shown.

I will treat myself with the same compassion I have for my patients, and will be grateful for the support and
encouragement of family and friends, recognizing that to heal others, I must be whole and healthy.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I lead a fulfilling life, as I have come to understand it, and enjoy the
privilege of practicing medicine.
