What is Attitude?
• An attitude is an individuals degree of like or
dislike for an item.

• They are basically Positive or Negative views of a

person. This is referred to as the attitude object.

• Most attitudes are the result of either direct

experience or observational. Most attitudes are
the result of either direct experience or
observational learning from the environment. i.e,
naturally inherited or as a result of peer groups.
Introduction
• To begin with, one must have the aptitude
and the right attitude.

• It's your aptitude, not just your attitude

that determines your ultimate altitude.

• Attitude is a great building block to a career, or it

can be a great impediment to your career.

• Blend attitude and aptitude, you can produce

success.

• A company expects a multifaceted roles and not a

person who will do things what he is expected to
do.
The ABC Model of attitude
• Attitude is a judgment which develop on the
ABC model (Affect ,Behavior & Cognition).
• The affective response is an emotional
response that expresses an individual's
degree of preference for an entity.
• The behavioral intention is a verbal
indication or typical behavioral tendency of
an individual.
• The cognitive response is a cognitive
evaluation of the entity that constitutes an
individual's beliefs about the object.
Attitude Formation
• Attitude is “a way of thinking, acting, or
feeling.”
• Unlike personality, its natural for
attitudes to change.
• Attitudes can be changed through
persuasion.
• Emotion is a common component
persuasion, social influence and
attitude change.
How does a Good attitude
help?
• A positive attitude helps to stay calm
even in times of trouble.
• It helps maintain good relations with
people around who will help us in
times of crisis.
• It is like a test in life during the tough
times which leaves an impact on the
people surrounding you & in your life.
• Having a positive attitude does not
mean being positive in times of
happiness.
• The main test is to remain positive in
times of trouble, crisis, & during your
bad days.
Think on this
• Can a hotel employee with great
aptitude, but a poor attitude provide
superior service?
• Yes, But the more pertinent question is:
Will that employee consistently provide
the level of service you want
and his guests deserve?
• Probably not.
• Will the poor attitude adversely
affect job performance?
• Yes
• Lets Look at the opposite?

• Can a positive attitude compensate for less

aptitude?

• We think it can, at least partially.  As a

guest, We are far more tolerant of a
genuinely cordial and guest-oriented
employee, Who may not be a technical wizard
• Than we are of the super efficient desk clerk
who does not smile, or even look us during
check in.
• Surveys indicate that most guests share our
level of tolerance.
For Example
• Take the case of Indian cricket,
• We have been unable to a find a top-
notch wicketkeeper?
• If we find the guy with the perfect
aptitude for the thankless job in cricket,
his attitude seems all gone awry !
• And the person with perfect attitude
doesn't have the finesse or talent to be
among the best !
Ten Commandments for a
Positive Attitude
• 1. ZIP IT.

• Learn to think before you speak. Bite your tongue

before that provocative remark comes out of your
mouth and you find yourself embroiled in a fight.
Whenever you have issues in the workplace,
you're better off thinking through your words
before you voice complaints, thoughts or
suggestions. Whether you're a business owner,
supervisor, manager or employee, the workplace
can sometimes become a tinderbox for conflict.
• 2. LISTEN, DON'T DISPUTE.

• Sometimes your manager needs to tell you how

disappointed he is with you. Sometimes your
co-worker needs to go on a diatribe about how
you "neglect" him. Sometimes your employee
needs to express his or her resentment about
the way you've treated them. You can't argue
with feelings. Listen when your co-workers,
managers, or employees express strong
feelings. Rather than argue and try to insist that
they shouldn't be feeling what they're feeling,
understand that they ARE feeling that way and
simply say, "I'm sorry you feel that way." Try to
put yourself in their shoes and give them the
empathy that you would want yourself. Arguing
may only make a situation worse
• 3. DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT AND DOCUMENT
AGAIN.
Rule No. 2 having been followed, make sure you protect
yourself with thorough documentation of any potentially
volatile situation. This rule applies to people on both
sides of the power structure. A smart employee as well
as a smart manager will document issues that relate to
self-preservation and the protection of job security.

• 4. GOOD FENCES MAKE FOR GOOD WORK

RELATIONSHIPS
Create boundaries and set limits in the workplace. Know
how much contact you can take and how much will
ignite your internal nuclear bomb. Also, keep in mind
that you don't know which one of your co-workers will
be easily ignited, offended or wounded; another reason
why keeping clear, but cordial, boundaries is another
way of protecting and preserving yourself.
• 5. CORDIALITY AND FRIENDLINESS
Having vowed to create appropriate boundaries,
make every effort to be cordial and friendly. Ask
co-workers and supervisors about how they are;
notice changes in their appearance in a
complimentary way. Comment positively on the
quality of their (good) work. Being popular can
only make work life easier.
• 6. NEVER OVERREACT
When co-workers feel neglected, they often will
create a scenario that invites your overreaction.
Overreactions cause all out wars and can get you
fired. Don't do it! Assess a dispute with your co-
worker. Is it really worth fighting over? Repeat to
your self, "They're only words and I WANT my
job."
• 7. PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS.
If you want to win the war (keep your job and
progress up the career ladder), sometimes it's
strategically advantageous to lose the battle.
Assess a work situation carefully. Positive and
assess your gains and losses in a situation. If
your supervisor or manager needs to act as if
he or she came up with an idea that was
actually yours, don't argue with them.
• 8. LET BREVITY AND PAUCITY BE YOUR
MOTTO.
In the workplace, if you keep contact limited
and utilize a cordial and polite silence to avoid
fights, you can often extinguish flames that are
being directed your way. Supervisors and
managers appreciate a cooperative employee
who gets to the point succinctly.
• 9. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET.
Do not ever try to change your co-
workers, especially those who are
above you in the hierarchy of the
workplace. It is a cardinal rule that
people can change themselves, but
none of us can change another. You
are doomed to failure if you try to get
your supervisor to see their flaws and
change their ways. Learn to change
what you can and accept what you
cannot change
• 10. STAY IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT.
Take control of potentially volatile work
situations and take charge of managing them.
For example, if you work for an individual who
needs ample amounts of admiration and
appreciation, give it to them. Work actively to
make your work life smoother and to protect
your employment and chances of rising on the
career ladder. Remember that the best defense
is a good offense. Strategize and evaluate the
personalities you contend with and apply good
people management techniques to the cast of
characters you live with during your workday.
Tips to stay Positive.
• Utilizing the concept of
"Gratefulness.“
• Adapt this concept to include not
only things that are good or positive,
but, also those things that are bad or
negative.
Help from experts.
• Tony Robbins teaches a concept about our brains
not being able to distinguish between reality and
what is vividly imagined. What would happen the
next time you are confronted with a negative
situation if you responded in a positive way? This
is exactly the basis of using gratefulness in
dealing with a negative! Instead of allowing a
negative attitude or situation to affect us in a
negative way, instead, say to yourself that I'm
grateful for this situation even though I don't
understand the "why" of it. Make a conscious
decision to be grateful instead of allowing it to
affect you negatively.
Case Study
• Robert, an I.T graduate, during the
period of lull in the I.T sector was forced
to be a clerk of the organization Falcon
Pvt Ltd, where he was previously the I.T
department Assistant.
• He was made to do small accounting
work & hardly paid.
• His subordinates were offered the job of
clerks.
• Roberts's subordinates accepted it
with a negative attitude & would
always complain.
• Robert did not like this so he took up
the work of a clerk.
• He offered his post of an accountant
to one of his subordinates.
• With his positive attitude towards the
work he never let himself down &
took pride in whatever he did.
• Slowly as time passed by the I.T
department saw a gradual rise in the
market.
• The I.T sector boomed & Robert was
made the Head of Department
because of his positive attitude
towards his organization.
• He became a role model for
everyone in the organization & was
given undue respect thereafter.
Conclusion
• Even if you don’t have a good aptitude,
having a good attitude towards life, will
make people start looking at you as idol.
• You Can Change your Attitude to what you
want it to be
• Only a positive attitude will help you reach
your targets
• Believe in your self, Change the way you
think about others and your self, Aim high
and See Your self Reaching new heights
