Activity Type Introduction

Listening and speaking In this rewarding teaching activity, students suggest the best way

Procedure
Language Focus
Begin by writing the following expressions for making suggestions
Making suggestions
on the board:

The best way to... is to...

Aim It's best to try to...
To suggest the best way You should try to make sure you...
to do different things. It's important to try to...
Make sure you...
It's better to try to... than it is to...
Preparation
Explain that the students are going to suggest the best way to do
Make one copy of the different things using the language on the board.
cards for each group of
three or four and cut as Ask the class: What's the best way to quit smoking?
indicated.
Have the students give you suggestions using the phrases on the
board.
Level
Next, divide the class into groups of three or four.
Intermediate
Give each group a set of cards. Ask the students to shuffle the
cards and place them face down on the table.
Time
The first student turns over the top card and says, "What's the
30 minutes best way to...?" The student then reads the topic on the card, e.g.
'What's the best way to find a job?'

The other students in the group then take it in turns to make

suggestions on the best way to do the thing on the card using the
language from the board.

The students then discuss the topic and see if they can agree on
the best suggestion.

Then, the next student picks up a card and so on. This continues
until all the cards have been used.

When the groups have finished, have a class feedback session to

discuss the best suggestions for each topic.

As an extension, students think of an activity without revealing

what it is. Students then take it in turns to suggest the best way
to do the activity and the class tries to guess what it is.
