Crodasoft TZ is a ready-to-use dry end softener
designed to improve the bulk softness of facial and
toilet tissue. Crodasoft TZ has been developed with
ease of use in mind. It is ready-to-use and water
soluble for easy cleaning of equipment. Designed for
ease of application, Crodasoft TZ is particularly
suitable for spray application.

Performance data
Crodasoft TZ is the result of extensive laboratory formulation and testing and has been shown to improve the
sensory feel of tissues, without affecting tissue colour or odour. At the low application levels required there is
minimal impact on facial and toilet tissue tensile strength.
The cushioning effect of Crodasoft TZ can be seen in the simple illustration below (figure 1). 40 sheets from a
market leading luxury brand toilet tissue roll, with and without Crodasoft TZ, were carefully placed in a pile for
comparison.

Sensory evaluation
The feel sensation of tissues is foremost in consumers’ minds and softness is a key factor in profitable tissue
making. It is also a highly complex and subjective experience which is difficult to quantify. The perception of
softness by panellists is therefore a powerful way of testing the effect of tissue coatings.
Panellists were asked to feel and assess a market leading 2ply toilet tissue and the same tissue coated with
Crodasoft TZ in a forced preference panel test. Each panellist was asked to select which tissue they preferred
for softness.
The results conclusively demonstrate that Crodasoft TZ improves the softness of tissue (figure 2). Significance
was demonstrated at P>0.001 level of confidence.

Sensory evaluation was carried out to International Standard ISO 5495 “Sensory Analysis Methodology: Paired
comparison test”.

Tensile strength
Effective at low levels, Crodasoft TZ has been shown to have minimal impact on the tensile strength of both
toilet and facial tissue.
Premium toilet and facial tissue, uncoated and Crodasoft TZ coated, was subjected to tensile strength testing
(machine direction). The results demonstrate that there is insignificant change in the tensile properties of the
tissue (figure 3).

Tensile strength testing was conducted in accordance with European Standard EN 12625-4:1999, with the
exception of the length of the test piece, this being limited by perforations in the toilet tissue.

Special care ingredients

For enhanced or modified physical properties, evocative marketing claims and additional skin care functionality,
Crodasoft TZ offers the opportunity for incorporation of cosmetic ingredients and botanical extracts. Ask your
local sales representative for inspiration and further information.

Tissue coating
Crodasoft TZ has been developed specifically with ease of use in mind. It is ready-to-use and water soluble for
easy cleaning. It can be easily applied by all types of dry end coating application equipment at room
temperature and is particularly suitable for spray application. Crodasoft TZ has been certified as “sprayable, as
supplied”, using Weko rotor damping equipment.

Dynamic viscosity at 25 °C 25 - 30 cP
Kinematic viscosity at 40 °C 10 - 15 mm2s-1
at 100 °C < 4 mm2s-1

Conductivity at 25 °C 20 - 22 mS

The viscosity of Crodasoft TZ is 14 seconds by the Ford cup (#4) measurement method.
Typical application levels are 2 - 3 gm-2. For further information regarding lotion application techniques please

Crodasoft TZ is suitable for most types and grades of tissue. But because we realise base sheets vary
considerably, in addition to technical support, Croda provides the facility to apply Crodasoft TZ to your tissue.

Registration
All Crodasoft TZ components are registered with, or exempt from EINECS, TSCA, DSL, AICS, MITI and ECL.

Croda operates a quality management system according to the requirements of PS 9100:2002. Although this
standard was written pharmaceutical excipients in mind, the principles in it that emphasise the need for product
purity, traceability and consistent performance from batch to batch are equally important for all industries that
Croda Chemicals Europe serves.

Health, safety and the environment

Crodasoft TZ is considered to be an acceptable cosmetic proprietary product. It is considered to be non-toxic
on ingestion, non-sensitising and essentially non-irritating to the skin. A separate material safety data sheet is
available on request.

Crodasoft TZ is considered to be inherently biodegradable and would not be expected to persist indefinitely in
the environment.
