Historical Background
Haryana not only claims the honour to the cradle of man, it has also
served as the cradle of civilization. The people in ancient times saw the dawn
of civilization in the regions of Indus Valley and that of Saraswati. The
various archaeological discoveries prove beyond doubt that the region was
inhabited from early times and was the centre of vigorous cultural and
political activity.

Although the word Haryana is hardly a millennium old, this land has
been highly said as the cradle of civilization, where on the banks of
Saraswati and Drishadvati the ancient habitations rose and developed. The
continuous history of the State is available through its various monuments,
sites and relics. History of Haryana begins with the appearance of first tool
making Man in the hills of hospitable Shiwaliks and Aravallis over million
years ago. The excavations at the archaeological sites like Kunal, Banawali,
Bhirdana and many more have pushed the history of civilization for more
than five thousand years.

No land on earth has such a long cultural continuity as India. More

than 5000 years ago there flourished in the north-western parts of the
Indian subcontinent a civilization which, deriving its name from the main
river of the region is known as the Indus Valley civilization. It occupied an
area much greater than that occupied jointly by the contemporary
civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Also throughout the region a
notably high standard of living was reached which is reflected in almost
every walk of life.

Four separate streams, all issuing from the Siwaliks bear the name of
Saraswati. Archaeologically, the flood-plains of the Saraswati and its major
as well as minor tributaries contain a remarkably high density of ancient
settlements ranging from the pre- Harappan to medieval times. Special
mention may be made of such well-known proto-historic settlements like
Rakhigarhi, Arada, Jind and Asand on the Drishadvati and Kalibangan,
Banawali, Kunal, Panditon-Ka-Tila, Bhagwanpura, Kasital, Raja Karan-ka-
Qila, Pehoa on the Saraswati, besides several historical ones. The
archaeological excavations at different sites like Kunal, Banawali, Bhirdana,
Rakhigarhi, Farmana, Sugh, Khokrakot, Agroha etc. have yielded relics of
successive phases of Indian history from Harappans to the Early Historical
era.

The relics regarding the Pre-Harappan and Harappan phase have been
unearthed at Kunal, Bhirdana, Farmana, Rakhigarhi, Banawali, Mitathal

and Balu all situated in Haryana. Pottery is found in very large quantities at
all ancient sites and may well be regarded as the index to the economic and
artistic standards of the population. The terracotta figurines, human as well
as animal, show vigour, variety, and ingenuity. Indus artist dealt with seals
in best manner, they are indispensible evidences of script and culture
studies of that time. Bronze objects for domestic use apart from making
figurines, is seen in the assortment of artefacts and vessels unearthed.

The Indus people used kiln-burnt bricks extensively. The excavations

at various sites have revealed that in the earliest phase people lived in
circular or semi-circular huts probably built of bamboo or wooden poles
with thatched roofs. In the second phase people started living in mud-walled
houses. In the third phase, houses were built of baked bricks.

Haryana has evidences of all these phases and features of civilization

at various sites that make it an indispensible centre of knowledge and
testimony of rich cultural heritage of the country.
