1. A power station operating in a Rankine Cycle generates 5 MW of power.

The net work

produced by the station is 1116.13 kJ/kg while the heat generated by the boiler is 3052
kJ/kg. How much fuel will have to be supplied to the power station per day? How much
CO2 and H2O are generated during the combustion process per day? Given that the fuel
used is liquified petroleum gas (LPG) which may be assumed to be 100% Butane C 4H10
with lower heating value = 45,370 kJ/kg. week 9 (3)

2. An electric heater has an efficiency of 90%. The power of the electric heater is 3.6kw.4
persons take a bath 2 times a day. During the bath, each person on an average operates
the heater for 15 minutes. The unit cost of electricity is RM0.40 per kWh. On the other
hand, a typical heat pump powered hot shower has a COP of 3.5. Determine the cost of
electricity per year using the electric heater and heat pump. Week 10 (8)
