"More Stories Than The Devil Got Sinners": Troy's Stories in August Wilson's "Fences"
"More Stories Than The Devil Got Sinners": Troy's Stories in August Wilson's "Fences"
ABSTRACT (ABSTRACT)
Examines the 1986 play "Fences" written by August Wilson. Touches on the plot, stating the play is set in 1957 and
centers on the character of Troy, the Pittsburgh garbage man and former Negro-League ball player to whom the
other characters react and to whom the male characters often compare themselves. Discusses Wilson's use of
storytelling, noting it is often connected to his mission to instruct playgoers about the oral traditions of black
culture. Informs that Troy's stories allow the playwright to show something of Troy's inner landscape, a frightening,
nightmare world in which duty and betrayal seem to transform into each other, to dramatize the inner struggle Troy
faces in maintaining his principles.
