A Research Study on Study Habits of University Students

Project Phase 1
Introduction

Study habit refers to the act of uninterrupted time dedicated to learning new concepts.
The future of a student depends upon his study habits. The study habits of a student decide about
the profession of a student in future. Thus it becomes essential for students to spare a few hours
daily to learn new concepts from their school time. Palani (2012) in his article has mentioned
that it is essential to develop regular study habits among students to make the society literary. It
will not only help in shaping their personality but will also help them to develop innovative and
creative skills [ CITATION Pal12 \l 1033 ]. Issa (2012) stated that good study habits can help the
students for the improvement of their academic scores. She mentioned that there is a direct
association between study habit academic results of students. [ CITATION Iss12 \l 1033 ]. Han
(2018) in his study has mentioned that there is a significant difference between studying habits as
well as the overall academic performance of male and female students [ CITATION Han18 \l 1033 ] .
[ CITATION Ayo13 \l 1033 ] in his study has mentioned that habit is behaviour and once it is formed
it is automatically repeated. He further stated that habits formed during school days go with us
throughout our life. Various researchers in their studies have explored the connection between
pattern of study among students and their performance in exams. Most of the researchers have
explored the positive relationship between the habits of students related to their studying pattern
and their performance in academic scores. But this factor cannot be ignored that the habits
formed at school level changes as the students enter college or university. Many times the
students start living away from their homes when they enter college or university. Then their
study habits depend upon the company they live in. A very few students can maintain their same
behavior at college or university level. There are various other factors which incorporate a
significant role in affecting the study habits of students at college or university level. Media is
one among them. Most of the students at the university level use the internet, which affects their
studying pattern and their attitude and behaviour towards their own life. Even if they want to use
media to explore their academic topics, they fall in the trap of various social media apps. Media
has changed the studying pattern of students. Thus it is essential to explore this area of research
by analyzing the effect of different factors on the study behaviour of students. Thus the main
objective of this research study is to assess the effects of study habits on the students’
performance in class at University level.
Population: Population for the research study refers to the accessible population that can be
targeted for conducting research. This population includes samples that will be selected to collect
data for research. The accessible population for this research study is university students. We
will target the university to know about their study habits.

Sample size and Sampling technique: Sample refers to a small part of the population that is
selected to conduct research. A sample size represents the whole accessible population. The
study will select a sample of 25 students from the total accessible population of university
students. There are various sampling techniques which help the researchers to select the sample
size for their research studies. In this research, a random sampling technique is used to select a
sample of 25 students. Random sampling technique is the easiest method to select the sample. It
was difficult for us to select a small number of students from a large population of students at the
university. Thus we adopt random sampling technique by selecting any 25 students from the
university campus.

Data collection methods: For data collection, the study has adopted the questionnaire technique.
An open-ended questionnaire containing 5 questions related to the study habits of university
students is used to assess the responses of the respondents.

Variables: Variables always explain the varying quantity and quality. The dependent variable of
the study shows the interest of the researcher and the independent variable is the cause of
affecting the dependent variable. The dependent variable in this study is the performance of the
students in the class and the independent variable of the study is the affect of various factors on
the studying pattern of the university students. In every research, confounding variables also play
an effective role. In this research study, the living environment of the students and the financial
condition of students act as the confounding variables which affect the dependence of the
dependent variable on the independent variable.

Conclusion:

This primary research analysis is the assessment of the impact of study behavior on the
performance of the university students in class due to existence of various control variables such
as the living environment of students and financial condition. The study will explore a new
outcome related to the study habits of university students.
