A Plot is a literary term for the main events in a story. It's also known as the
storyline. The plot is created by the story's author, who arranges actions in a meaningful
way to shape the story. This means that not all stories are told in chronological order.
A Character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story. Writers use
characters to perform the actions and speak dialogue, moving the story along a plot
line. A story can have only one character (protagonist) and still be a complete story.
Point of View refers to who is telling or narrating a story. A story can be told
from the first person, second person or third person point of view (POV).
A Setting (or backdrop) is the time and geographic location within a narrative,
either nonfiction or fiction. It is a literary element. The setting initiates the main backdrop
and mood for a story.
Symbolism is a figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has
another meaning other than its literal meaning. The actions of a character, word, action,
or event that have a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story.
Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the
opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Dialogue is typically a conversation between two or more people in a narrative
work. As a literary technique, dialogue serves several purposes. It can advance the plot,
reveal a character's thoughts or feelings, or show how characters react in the moment.
A Scene is a contained narrative unit that takes place within a larger narrative.
