ASSIGNMENT 01 FEEDBACK _2016_SEMESTER 02 UNIQUE NUMBER 808596

1. Proverbs play an important role in the lives of African people. They were used in
different situations that involve the families, in the upbringing of children, to give
solutions to problems, to teach on how to live with each other as people et cetera.
Learners’s responses must show how these were done and be supported by relevant
examples. /25/

2. Folktales were used by African traditional societies to preserve and impart to future
generations valuable moral lessons. The learner is expected to use one folktale and
show how this folktale was used by these African traditional societies in imparting and
preserving valuable moral lessons to future generations. A word of warning the learner
is not expected to write about the folktale BUT to show how this folktale was used in
this regard. /25/

3. Games that benefited the young were encouraged in African societies. The learner is
expected to mention one game that was played by children in these societies and
indicate how such a game helped in the development of linguistic, social and
educational skills. Riddles for example, are such a game, they teach the children
about linguistic skills (the learner has to support this by giving examples of such
riddles in an African language of his/her choice). Riddles teach children about social
skills. When riddles are played the children learn to give each other a chance in asking
and responding. This emphasizes the skill that enhances the process of giving each
other opportunities or chances when they are engaged in a conversation so that they
can live well in life (once more the learner has to provide examples of this in an African
language of his/her choice). Riddles also encourage the following things to children:
knowledge about things that surround them; knowledge about things that are at home;
knowledge about body parts (the learner has to provide appropriate examples that are
taken from an African language of his/her choice). /25/

4. Learners are expected to discuss how African writers and poets have communicated
their views in their literary works on issues of land ownership. A learner is expected to
write about one author or poet in his/her chosen African language with regard to land
ownership issues. /25/
