d. 100 cm2 A=sxs
4. 2 cm For the rectangle,
e. 120 cm2 we use the
formula: A = l x w

c. Get the area of the irregular figure by adding the areas of the
square and the rectangle.

Solution B: Using Vertical Cuts
a. Let’s cut up the figure into three rectangles using vertical lines.

b. Find the lengths and widths of the rectangles and solve for the
area of each.
Area of rectangle Area of rectangle Y
X A =L x W
A = LxW =7mx4m
= 4mx3m How did we = 28 m2
= 12 m2 get 7 m?
We added 4
Area of rectangle Z m and 3 m.
A =LxW
=4mx3m
= 12 m2
c. Then, add the areas of the three rectangles to get the area of
the irregular figure.
Area of the irregular figure = X + Y + Z
= 12 m2 + 28 m2 + 12 m2
= 52 m2

For the irregular figure above, how do you cut up the figure
into rectangles and/or squares?
Consider this.

5m
4m X Y
3m
7m
Area = X + Y
= 8 m2 + 15 m2
= 23 m2

How can you break it up
into rectangles and/or

squares?
Area of square Y

A=sxs
= 2 cm x 2 cm
4 cm 4 cm = 4 cm2
Y Z
Area of square Z
2 cm 2 cm A=sxs
= 2 cm x 2 cm
= 4 cm2
Area of rectangle X
How did we get 2 cm?
A=lxw We subtracted 2 cm from 4
= 6 cm x 2 cm cm which is the original
= 12 cm2 length.
