MODULE 21

ACTIVITY
Read the following research findings then reflect on your very own experiences:

Answer:- Based on these activities, I think I experienced it all. But the most experience that I
didn’t forget is having the low – income in our family. So there is a time that I want to stop
my studies, I just need to find a work in order to help my parents. But it came to my mind
that I need to continue my studies because at the end of the day the only who can benefit
for this is myself. So until now I’m still pursuing my dreams, continues to achieving what I
want to become in the future which is to become a successful educator. Even though we
haven’t enough income right now, I will continue what I’ve started because there’s lot of
way to do what I want in life. Especially today that there is lot of part time jobs that
available, I will grab all the opportunities came in my comfort zone.

ANALYSIS
1. Read the following research findings. Do your experiences and
observations support or contradict the research findings?
ANSWER: I agree that students from low-income families are among those most likely to be
at risk of failing and dropping out of school. Many students from low income families cannot
afford the necessary classroom supplies for basic classroom functions. A pattern of failure
may start quite early for many lower-income students especially if they have not had the
early experiences upon which school learning often builds. Even though they have limited
experiences, they may not be able to pay for field trips and cannot pay for extracurricular
activities of any kind, which could expand their experience base. They can face many
challenges that affect their brain development, emotional well-being, relationship with
others, and school achievement.

There are different motivational patterns for students belonging to ethnic communities.
Students from Asian-American families may feel more pressured to perform well in school
because of the culture values that serve as primary source of academic motivation are
different from other country that’s why personal struggles with cultural identity, cultural
beliefs and societal dynamics plays in the academic performance.

Young children often want to gain teacher’s approval to be motivated because a child who
performs in school to gain approval, grades, or rewards is externally motivated and also they
learn how to think, experiment, discover, and generate new questions and new discovery.
They also allow for self-exploration, emotional growth and moral and ethical development.
While older ones are more typically interested in gaining the approval of peers because
adults are good in social support. They are good enough to handle social and emotional
opportunities, peer of acceptance, friendship, companionship, recreation, social skills, and
managing competitions and conflict.
SYNAPSE STRENGTHENERS
Compare these research findings in activity B above. Do they jibe or do they
contradict each other? What is your stand?

ANSWER: The research findings contradict to the Survival Kit from the Guidance
office of St. Louis University. The research findings in Activity B states that students
attribute success or failure to an ability that is stable and uncontrollable, and effort
becomes a sign of low ability, whereas the Survival Kit shows that in College
Industry, Effort and Effective study Methods have the biggest percentage that
attributes to the success and failure in learning.

As for my stand, I agree more on the Survival Kit from the Guidance office of St.
Louis University. Based on my own experience as a college student, Abilities such as
intelligence or being smart is not enough to be successful in learning. In order for
effective learning to happen, one must exert hard work and effective strategies.
Courage is still the trait that students should attribute their learning success and
progress.
