OBJECTIVE: Illustrates betweenness and collinearity of points

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Illustrating Betweenness and Collinearity of Points

In this lesson, you will learn that the concept of betweenness can be expressed in
terms of the coordinates of the points or in terms of the distance between points on the
number line.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

The word “between” is a commonly used word but it has different meanings.
This is made clearer in the following examples.

• Case 1. If three classmates sit in different rows, can we say that one of them sits between
the other two? How about if they sit on the same row?

• Case 2. Suppose that Ayel sits between Ria and Kyra in the front row. Can we also say
that Ria sits between Ayel and Kyra? Or that Kyra sits between Ayel and Ria?

• Case 3. Suppose that Ayel, Ria and Kyra sit around a round table so that they are equally
spaced from each other. Can we tell who among the three sits between the other two?

• Case 4. Suppose the coordinate of P is 4, the coordinate of Q is 7, and R is between P

and Q. What can you say about the coordinate of R?

• Case 5. What is meant when we say the number r is between the numbers p and q?

• Case 6. Suppose that A, B and C lie on a line; the coordinate of A is 5, the coordinate of
B is -3 and the coordinate of C is -1. Which point is between the other two? Determine
the distance between A and B denoted by |𝐴𝐵|; the distance between B and C denoted
by |𝐵𝐶|; and the distance between A and C denoted by |𝐴𝐶|. Write an equation that
relates |𝐴𝐵|, |𝐵𝐶| and |𝐴𝐶|.

The first three cases help us understand that for points, the relation of betweenness
implies some order in a row or in a line. Furthermore, cases 4 to 6 show that when we
speak of a point being between two other points, the relation can be expressed in terms
of their coordinates or in terms of their distances.

Given the number line,

Name: _________________________________ Grade & Section: __________________
Name of Teacher: ________________________

➢ The two points A and B, together with all the points between them make up ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑨𝑩.
Points A and B are called endpoints of the segment.

➢ What are the named points on the line? Give their coordinates.

⃡ , the points between them are collinear points.

➢ In 𝑨𝑱

➢ Point C is between points A and J since they are collinear points.

Therefore,

|𝐴𝐶| + |𝐶𝐽| = |𝐴𝐽|

Also, pt. H is between A and J since they are collinear points,

therefore,

⌈𝐴𝐻⌉ + |𝐻𝐽| = |𝐴𝐽|

➢ Points A, B, C and D are collinear points and B is at the center of ̅̅̅̅̅

𝐴𝐶.
Using their coordinates, find:

|𝐴𝐵| = |(−15) − (−10)| = |−15 + 10| = |−5| = 5

|𝐴𝐷| = |(−15) − 0| = |−15| = 15.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE

1. The following situations illustrate different meanings of the term between. Which
of these have reference to order?

a. Our house is located between the drugstore and the gasoline station.
b. Let this secret be between you and me only.
c. I’ll meet you at the gate between 9 and 9:10 tomorrow morning.
d. Let the mayor be our go-between in this transaction.
e. We have only P 1 000 between the two of us.
Answer: a

2. The points A, B and C are on a line such that |𝐴𝐵| = 5, |𝐵𝐶| = 2 and |𝐴𝐶| = 3. Use the term
“between” to describe the order of the points A, B and C.
Answer: C is between A and B.

3. The points P, Q and R on a line have respective coordinates -1, -2, 3. Use the term between
to describe the order of the points P, Q and R.
Answer: P is between Q and R.

4. The points L and M have coordinates -4 and 5 respectively. Describe the set N of all possible
coordinates of points between L and M.
Answer: N is greater than -4 but less than 5.

5. The points on the following line are at equal intervals. Find the distance between each of the
given pair of points.

a. F and J b. G and K c. B and H d. A and E e. B and I

Answers:
3 1 2
a. |𝐹𝐽| = |1 − 3| = |−2| = 2 d. |𝐴𝐸| = |− − (− )| = |− | = 1
2 2 2

3 7 4 5 7
b. |𝐺𝐾| = |2 − 2| = |− 2| =|−2| = 2 e. |𝐵𝐼| = |−1 − 2| = |− 2| = 7/2 or 3 ½

c. |𝐵𝐻| = |−1 − 2| = |−3| = 3

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1:

A. Using the given number line, find

1. AB 4. AD
2. BC 5. BE
3. DE 6. CF

B. Using the same figure above, determine which of the following relations are
true.

7. CD < AC 10. AB = BC
8. AB > CD 11. AB + BC = AC
9. BC > CD 12. BC + CD = AD

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:

Answer the following.

1. If X = -13, Y = -2 and Z = 14, find:

a. |𝑋𝑌| b. |𝑋𝑍| c. |𝑌𝑍|

a. T is between R and S?
b. S is between R and T?

SUMMING UP
Point C is between A and B if A, B and C are collinear and
|𝐴𝐶| + |𝐶𝐵| = |𝐴𝐵|.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Answer the following.

1. A, B and C are three points on a line. The coordinates of A and B are -4 and 8 respectively. If
C is the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵, what is the coordinate of C?

̅̅̅̅ is 6. If the coordinate of P is greater than the coordinate

2. The coordinate of O, the center of 𝑃𝑄
of Q. and if OQ = 10, what are the coordinates of P and Q?

3. Four points Q, R, S and T are arranged along a line such that QS > QR and RT < RS. Draw
a line with the four points in place.
