Section 1 of this manual provides the operating limitations, the significance of such limitations, instrument
markings, color coding, and basic placards necessary for safe operation of the airplane, its engines and
systems. The limitations in this section have been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, and NOTES are used throughout this manual to emphasize important operating
information.

NOTE
When operating in accordance with Section 4, Part I (Reduced Power Takeoff Operations) the following
limitations apply:
1. The engine torque used for a takeoff may not be less than 90% of the torque shown by the appropriate
power setting chart for the actual ambient conditions.
2. The use of reduced power for takeoff is not permitted when the runway is contaminated with water,
ice, slush, or snow.
3. As a condition to the use of reduced power procedures, operators must establish a periodic check
system or engine condition monitoring system to ensure that the engines are capable of producing
normal takeoff thrust for the actual ambient temperature.
4. Air Carrier or Air Taxi commercial operators must have prior approval of the cognizant FAA inspector
prior to conducting reduced power takeoff operations.
5. The minimum crew for reduced power takeoff operations is two pilots.

PROPELLER REVERSING
Full reverse operations (landing roll out, taxi, and ramp operations) are limited to speeds below 90
knots.
WARNING
Use aviation fuels conforming to AiResearch Installation Manual IM5117 (Jet A, Jet A-1, Jet B, JP-1,
JP-4, JP-5, and JP-8). Grade 100LL aviation gasoline may be used at a rate not to exceed 250 U.S.
gallons (950 liters) per 100 hours of operation, with the total use limited to 7,000 U.S. gallons (26500 liters)
per engine overhaul period. Jet fuel and aviation gasoline may be mixed in any proportion. If 25% or more
aviation gasoline is used, add one U.S. quart (one liter) of MIL-L-6082 specification grade 1065 or 1100
piston engine oil per 100 U.S. gallons (380 liters) of aviation gasoline to provide fuel pump lubrication.
NOTE
Icing inhibitor MIL-I-27686E fuel additive, or equivalent, is approved not to exceed 0.15% by volume.
Maximum fuel imbalance for takeoff, landing, and normal flight is 200 pounds (90 kg).
Boost pumps must be on for all flight operations outside the no boost pumps required envelope of
Figure 1-1.

NOTE
The minimum AWI fluid quantity for the single engine approach
climb profile is 5.2 U.S. gallons plus 2 U.S. gallons unusable. The
maneuver is assumed to start with wet takeoff power set, landing
gear retracted, flaps set at 1/4, and at the climb speed obtained
from Figure 4G-4. At 400 feet above the surface the flaps are
retracted while accelerating to VYSE where power is reduced to
MCP.
The CAWI system may not be operated if the AWI fluid has been exposed to ambient temperatures
below –24oC within the preceding one hour.
Methyl Alcohol (Methanol) having a minimum purity of 99.8 weight percentage and nonvolatile content
of less than 0.001 weight percentage shall be used.

Water shall conform to the following requirements: It shall be treated by a demineralization process or
shall be distilled if necessary to ensure conformation (Material Specification – EMS 53123).

CAUTION
NOTE
The following engine record keeping rules apply to reserve power usage:
1. Record (log) fifty minutes time in service for each minute of reserve power operation in which
the EGT exceeds 630oC.
2. Four cycles must be added to the engine records for each reserve power operation in which the
EGT exceeds 630oC. (A cycle consists of one start-stop sequence that includes flight; ground
running is not included.)
NOTE
Successful engine starts may not be possible if the fuel has cold
soaked at temperatures below –40oC.
Operation of the airplane with the SRL inoperative is prohibited except as stipulated in Section 3A,
ABNORMAL PROCEDURES, and Supplement 1, TAKEOFF WITH SRL OFF/INOPERATIVE.
Due to the possibility of excessively high current surge during engine start, it is recommended that the
maximum starting current from an external power source be limited to 1,000 amperes.

* The specified starter ON times assume no ignition of fuel but do include engine clearing time. Starter
ON time may be extended if ignition of fuel occurs, but procedures listed under Battery Start in
Sections 2 and 3A should be observed.
Takeoff with inoperative equipment is permitted only when the airplane is operated in accordance with
an approved Minimum Equipment List (MEL).
NOTE
2. Takeoff after a battery overheat warning (red light) illuminates is prohibited until the cause of the
overheat warning is corrected.
RPM with the bypass valve open must be maintained between 99 and 101% or between 96 and 98%.
Do not take off with either fuel bypass valve failed in the open position.
Takeoffs with a temperature limiter inoperative (fuel bypass valve in the closed position) are limited to
two pilot operations and must be conducted as authorized by an approved Minimum Equipment List
(MEL).
The fire extinguisher system is required equipment. If the system does not test satisfactorily (see
Section 2), takeoff is prohibited.
AIRSTART ENVELOPE
2. At intervals not to exceed 250 flight hours in accordance with instructions in Garrett
Maintenance Manual, 72-00-00.
B. The SRL Computer and Temperature Limiter System should be checked operationally:

C. The overspeed governors and the propeller unfeathering pumps should be checked operationally:
2. Prior to any flight for which intentional air starts are planned.
A. The Stall Avoidance System (SAS) must be checked operationally before the first flight of the day
in accordance with the procedure in Section 2.
B. The Reserve Power System (if installed) must be checked operationally in accordance with the
procedure in Section 2 prior to any flight when takeoff performance is predicated on its use.
SHUTDOWN 3 MIN.(8)
(1) Avoid operation between 18% and 28% RPM except for transients occurring during engine start and shutdown.
96% is the minimum RPM during flight. At 100% RPM, propeller speed is 1591 RPM.
(2) Static takeoff power should be limited to 107% dry torque to preclude overtorque condition occurring due to ram
effects during takeoff. (100% equals 3,301 ft.-lbs.).
(3) 650oC to 675oC, reduce power. 675oC to 685oC for less than 20 seconds, reduce power. 675oC to 685oC for
more than 20 seconds, conduct power check. 685oC to 687oC for up to 5 seconds, conduct power check. 685oC
to 687oC for more than 5 seconds or in excess of 687oC, remove engine.
(4) 101% to 101.5% for 5 minutes, 101.5% to 105.5% for 30 seconds. If RPM time limits are exceeded, conduct
power checks to determine satisfactory engine performance. Record time in excess of time limits in engine log
book. 105.5% to 106% for 5 seconds. If 5 second time limit or 106% is exceeded, remove engine.
(5) Static takeoff power should be limited to 107% wet torque to preclude overtorque condition occurring due to
ram effects during takeoff.
(6) Above 23,000 feet, minimum oil pressure is 50 psi.
(7) Typical engine speeds for low and high RPM speed lever position.
(8) Three minute cooldown period prior to stopping engines. Descent, approach, landing roll, and taxi times are
included if power during those phases does not exceed 20% torque. If reverse power is used and exceeds
20% power (stabilized) the 3 minute cooling period commences at engine power reduction.
(9) For TPE331-12UAR-701G and TPE331-12UHR-701G engines only. Reserve Power is limited to single engine
emergency operations.
(10) Limited to operation at 100% RPM.

CABIN PRESSURIZATION
NOTE
APPROVED BRAKES
1. Check the nose wheel steering prior to each takeoff using the procedures in the Normal
Procedures section of this manual, page 2-35.
2. The use of nose wheel steering for takeoff and landing is prohibited. Prior to each takeoff, turn
the nose wheel arm switch to "OFF", and do not turn to "ON" until after landing and the airplane
has slowed to taxi speed.
3. Use of nose wheel steering is prohibited when there has been a hydraulic system failure.
4. Use of nose wheel steering is prohibited when the arming valve has failed to test properly.
5. Nose Wheel Steering must be on and operating during single engine taxi operations.

Procedures section of this manual (page 2-35). Use of nose wheel steering for takeoff or
landing is prohibited if the system fails to test properly.

Cargo and passengers must be distributed to ensure that the maximum bending moments in the

NOTE
CONVERTIBLE INTERIOR
The SA227-DC interior is designed to permit conversion from a 19-passenger arrangement to full
or partial cargo configurations. Seats may be removed, and the structural bulkhead(s) may be
removed, or relocated to any of several locations shown in Section 5.
NOTE
Loose rigid packages retained by the cargo nets must be limited to 70 pounds each. Heavier items
must be secured by additional means. See instructions in Section 5.

• At all weights 11,000 pounds (4990 kg) and lower, the approved
c.g. range is 257.0 inches (6528 mm) to 277.0 inches (7036 mm)
aft of datum.
• Both the zero fuel weight (ZFW) and c.g., and the takeoff weight
and c.g. must be within the above envelope.

(b) The weight at which the landing distance (Figure 4G-4) equals the landing runway length.
NOTE
MINIMUM CREW
An FAA approved hand held (or automated) checklist is required for all single pilot operations.
Cockpit instrument/avionics arrangement must be approved per SA227-DC Type Certificate Data
Sheet A18SW.
This is a commuter category airplane approved for operation in Day / Night, VFR / IFR and icing
conditions.
Ingestion of slush, excessive quantities of water, or ice shedding from spinners, propellers, and / or
engine intakes may interrupt air flowing to the combustion chambers and cause engine flameout.
Specific operating instructions for use of the continuous ignition system are in the form of procedures,
notes, and warnings in Sections 2, 3, and 3A and must be followed.
The following equipment must be installed and operable for each approved type of operation, as
indicated.
NOTE
The following systems and equipment list does not include all
equipment required by the FAR Part 91 and 135 Operating
Requirements. It also does not include components obviously
required for the airplane to be airworthy such as wings,
empennage, engines, etc.

The following equipment must be ON, operative, and utilized in accordance with the operating
procedures sections of this manual:
NOTE
Except for certain phases of flight where the AFM specifies that deicing boots should not be used
(e.g. take-off, final approach, and landing), compliance with the following is required.
• Wing and Tail Leading Edge Pneumatic Deicing Boot System, if installed, must be activated:
– At the first sign of ice formation anywhere on the aircraft, or upon annunciation from an ice
detector system, whichever occurs first; and
– The system must either be continued to be operated in the automatic cycling mode, if available;
or the system must be manually cycled as needed to minimize the ice accretions on the
airframe.
• The wing and tail leading edge pneumatic deicing boot system may be deactivated only after:
– Leaving known or observed/detected icing that the flight crew has visually observed on the
aircraft or was identified by the on-board sensors; and
