The Gippsland Exploration Exercise: Technical Deliverables

 Use the supplied tracing paper to compile the CRS map suite
 Please use the color scheme included in the exercise instructions to describe the major facies/risks
 Each team will be asked to produce a brief 15 minutes presentation on Thursday afternoon aiming at presenting the
technical case to support your bid (you don’t have to use PowerPoint).

Gippsland Basin Background

 Flanked by fault-bounded platforms and terraces to the north and south
 To the east, the Central Deep is characterized by rapidly increasing water depths; >3000 m in
the Bass Canyon

11 Schlumberger-Private

Gippsland Sedimentary Background

Succeeded by carbonate sequences from the lower
Oligocene to Holocene

Dominantly siliciclastic sedimentary sequences from the Upper

Cretaceous to Eocene

Sediment source direction

Sediment was sourced from the Australian continent to the north and the
Bassian Rise and Southern Platform to the southwest.

Gippsland Tectonic Background

 Affected by 2 major extension events
 Incised channels

Inversion due to Northward movement of Australia

Late Cretaceous, perhaps associated with both Turonian extension

between Australia and Antarctica due to the opening of the Tasman
Sea to the East

Initial rifting in the Early Cretaceous producing grabens and half

grabens due to the break-up of Gondwana

Gippsland Basin Analog: Otway basin

The current view of the prospectivity of the Gippsland basin is based on the argument that it may also prove to be a
petroleum province of similar scale to the analogue Cretaceous basin in the neighboring Otway basin.
Also large undrilled structures, observed on regional seismic data located in the basin could provide billion barrel
potential.

Gippsland Basin - 1D Burial Exercise

 Using your knowledge of the basin, the well data provided and the provided empty
plot, reconstruct the time burial plot at each of the well location.

 Pay attention to the various events affecting the basin but also to the paleo
bathymetry.

 Note: these plots will be used during the exploration exercise later.

present day source rock maturity on a well base map:
 Overmature >4%
 Dry gas window 1.8-4%
 Main gas window 1.3-1.8%
 Oil window 0.6-1.3%
 Immature <0.6%

Use the “distance to kitchen” map and following cut-offs to map the charge efficiency map:
 High charge efficiency < 3km
 Medium charge efficiency 11km<d<3km
 Low charge efficiency >11km

Combine the maps to get your final Source Rock CRS map

The Gippsland Exploration Exercise: Latrobe Reservoir efficiency

Use your observations from previous tasks, the reservoir porosity and permeability maps and cut-offs to map the reservoir
effectiveness:
 High effective porosity >18%
 Medium Effective Porosity 8%<Φ<18%
 Low Effective Porosity < 8%

 High Permeability >6 mD

 Medium Permeability 1mD<K<6mD
 Low Permeability <1mD

Combine these maps with your reservoir presence map to get your final Latrobe reservoir CRS map

The Gippsland Exploration Exercise: Lakes Entrance Seal

Use your observations from previous tasks, the Lakes Entrance Seal thickness map and the cut-offs to map the seal
effectiveness:
 Good sealing > 400m
 Medium sealing 100m<thickness<400m
 Low sealing <100m
