Assignment # 2

1) Ali is whirling a 0.5kg stone about in a sling. The sling consists of two 80cm long cords
tied to either side of a pouch that hold the stone. Ali lets go of one cord to release the stone.
The sling makes 4.8 revolution per second in a horizontal plane 2m above the ground.
a) What is the speed of the stone when it leaves the sling?
b) What is the tension in each of the two cords (assumed equal) before one is released?
c) How far from the release point does the stone land? Ignore air resistance.
d) Sketch/Draw FBD.
2) A roller coaster includes a vertical circular loop of radius 20m. what is the minimum speed
at which the car must move at the top of the loop so that it doesn’t loose contact with the
track?
3) A car is moving on a muddy road and is stuck in the mud. The driver efforts to move the
car and splashes mud from the rim of a tire of radius “R” spinning at a speed v , where
v 2  gR . Ignoring the resistance of the air, show that no mud can rise higher than a height

v 2 gR 2
R+ + above the ground.
2 g 2v 2
4) Consider the given figure which shows a ramp/path on which a car slides down without
friction and describe by a height function h( x ) . The ramp is followed by a loop of radius R.

Gravitational acceleration is a constant “g: in the negative “h” direction. If the velocity is
zero when x =0 , what is the minimum height h0 = h(0) such that the car goes around the

loop, never leaving the track?

5) A puck of mass m = 1.50 kg slides in a circle of radius r = 20.0 cm on a frictionless table
while attached to a hanging cylinder of mass M = 2.50 kg by means of a cord that extends
through a hole in the table as shown in figure. What speed keeps the cylinder at rest?

6) Consider a system in which a cord runs around two massless, frictionless pulleys as shown
in figure below. An object of mass m = 20 kg hangs from one pulley, and you exert a force
“F” on the free end of the cord.
a) What is the magnitude of “F” if you are to lift the object at a constant speed?
b) To lift the object by 2.0 cm, how far must you pull the free end of the cord?
c) During that lift, what is the work done on the object by (i) your force (via the cord)
and (ii) the gravitational force?

7) A breadbox of mass 2kg on a frictionless incline of angle “40” is connected, by a cord that
runs over a pulley, to a light spring of spring constant 120 N/m, as shown in above figure.
The box is released from rest when the spring is unstretched. Assume that the pulley is
massless and frictionless.
a. What is the speed of the box when it has moved 10 cm down the incline?
b. How far down the incline from its point of release does the box slide before
momentarily stopping?
c. what are the magnitude and direction (up or down the incline) of the box’s
acceleration at the instant the box momentarily stops?
8) Consider the figure shown below in which block A = 1kg and B = 2kg and angle is 30. The
pulley is massless, and both the pulley and inclined plane are frictionless. If the blocks are
released from rest with the connecting cord taut, what is their total kinetic energy when
block B has fallen 25 cm?

9) The system shown above is released from rest with no slack in the cable and with the spring
stretched 200 mm. Determine the distance “s” traveled by the 10-kg cart before it comes
to rest (a) if m approaches zero and (b) if m = 2kg, Assume no mechanical interference.
10) Two Springs are connected at their ends as shown in figure. Calculate the effective force
constant of this combination.
