straight upward on it. What must be the tension in the rope?

4. A horizontal force of 140N is needed to pull a 60.0kg box across the horizontal floor at
constant speed. What is the coefficient of friction between the floor and box?
5. The only force acting on a 5.0 kg object has the components 𝐹𝑥 = 20𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑦 = 30𝑁.

time of 3.0 sec. Find the force.

8. A 400g block with an initial speed of 80 cm/s slides along a horizontal tabletop against a
friction force of 0.70N. a) How far will it slide before stopping? B) What is the coefficient
of friction between the block and the tabletop?
9. A 600 kg car is moving on a level road at 30 m/s. a) How large a retarding force (assumed
constant) is required to stop it in a distance of 70m? b) What is the minimum coefficient

locked, in which case we are dealing with static friction.

12. As shown in figure below, a force of 400N pushes on a 25kg box. Starting from rest, the
box achieves a velocity of 2.0 m/s in a time of 4.0 sec. Find the kinetic friction between
box and floor.
13. A 200N wagon is to be pulled up a 30° incline at constant speed. How large a force
parallel to the incline is needed if friction effects are negligible?
14. A cord passing over an easily turned pulley (one that is both massless and frictionless)
has a 7.0 kg mass hanging from one end and a 9.0 kg mass hanging from the other, as
shown in figure below. Find the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the cord.
15. Two wooden blocks are attached by a massless rope that is placed over a pulley. One
block, 𝑚1 , is resting on a wooden table while the other block, 𝑚2 , is suspended by the
opposite end of the rope as seen in the image below. Block one, 𝑚1 , has a mass of 24kg
and block two, 𝑚2 , has a mass of 15kg. If the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.2, and block
two, 𝑚2 , accelerates downward, what is the acceleration of the system?
