the resultant force acting on it and the magnitude of the resultant force.

3. Besides its weight, a 2.80-kg object is subjected to one other constant force.
The object starts from rest and in 1.20 s experiences a displacement of 24.26i −

5. A bag of cement of weight 325 N hangs from three wires as suggested in the
figure. Two of the wires make angles 𝜃! = 60° and 𝜃" = 25° with the horizontal. If
the system is in equilibrium, find the tensions 𝑇!, 𝑇", and 𝑇# in the wires.

calibrated in newtons, what do they read? (Neglect the masses of the pulleys and

time? (b) Find the total work done on the object if its velocity changes to (86i + 46j) m/s.

15. A sled of mass 𝑚 is given a kick on a frozen pond. The kick imparts to it an initial
speed of 2 m/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction between sled and ice is 0.1. Use energy
considerations to find the distance the sled moves before it stops.

16. A 2.00-kg block is attached to a spring of force constant 500 N/m. The block is pulled
5.00 cm to the right of equilibrium as in the figure and released from rest. Find the speed
of the block as it passes through equilibrium if (a) the horizontal surface is frictionless and

of angle. While sliding, it contacts an unstressed spring of negligible mass as shown in the
figure. The object slides an additional distance x as it is brought momentarily to rest by
compression of the spring (of force constant k). Find the initial separation d between
object and spring.

18. Two objects are connected by a light string passing over a light frictionless pulley as
shown in the figure. The object of mass 5.00 kg is released from rest. Using the principle
of conservation of energy, (a) determine the speed of the 3.00-kg object just as the
5.00-kg object hits the ground. (b) Find the maximum height to which the 3.00-kg object
rises.
