1. TOEIC listening test structure Part 2


TOEIC Listening Part 2 will consist of 25 questions sentence in new format 2019. Each question has 1
question and 3 choice of answers. The task is to choose an answer that is compatible with the question
in the lesson.

In part 2, questions and answers are not printed in the test. You only hear one question and 3 options
for each question and then choose the answer that matches the question.

2. Allocate time method to work – Tips Part 2 TOEIC Test Listening


With TOEIC Part 2 includes 30 questions, when you step into each question you will pratice 4 steps of
Tips Part 2 TOEIC Test Listening:

1: Listen to a question or a sentence

2: Listen to the 3 answers / answers above (corresponding to 3 options A, B, C)

3: Choose a response that best fits the question

4: Use 5s to rest between 2 sentences to prepare for the next sentence

You will have to try to remember both the question and the 3 options so having a good short-term
memory is an advantage. Which sentences you cannot hear should be skipped to prepare for the next
sentence.

3. Types of questions to meet


In the TOEIC Listening Part 2, the following types of questions often appear:

a. Wh-question
A type of question with “question words” such as Where, When, Who, How, Why.
For example: Who has the copy of the report? (Who has a copy of the report?)

Where can I buy a new desk? Where can I buy a new chair?

b. Yes / No question
This is a type of question that the listener can answer Yes or No.

For example: Haven’t you had lunch? (Haven’t you had lunch yet?)

No, I didn’t have time. (No, I don’t have time.)

c. Tag question (question tail)
A form of questions with the first paragraph like the affirmative sentence, but at the end the question
“right?”
Example: The report is hard to understand, isn’t it? (The report is hard to understand, isn’t it?)

Yes, little’s very confusing. (Yes, it is very confusing)

d. Suggestion / request

A type of suggestion / request to do something.

For example: Would you like to walk to the convention center? (Do you want to walk to the
convention center?)

Thats sounds like a great idea. (That seems like a great idea.)

e. Statement
A statement is an opinion form, the answer usually gives the opinion: agree/disagree or neutral.

For example: The neighbors upstairs are so noisy. (The neighbors upstairs are noisy.)

Yes, they certainly are. (Yes, they certainly are)

g. Choice question
This type of question often has “or” appears.
For example: Would you like the table inside or outside? (Do you want to get the table inside or
outside?)

I’ll take the table inside. (I’ll take the table inside)

a. Who
Common types of answers

✓ Name of person: Mr. Smith, Ms. Nancy, …

For example: Who is going to meet Mr. Continue at the airport?

He’s at the airport

Mrs. Garcia will pick him up

✓ Position: manager, assistant, head of department, etc.

For example: Hello. Uh. Who are you?

Fine, thank you

✓ Name of company, department: Design-House Company, Sales Department,….

✓ The form “I don’t know”: The answers did not identify the audience: It has never been decided yet

Advice

• Exclude answers with Yes / No


• The correct answer is usually a proper name: company name, person’s name, job title, position
• The answer must match the question tense. (This is the kind of trap you often forget)
• Learn vocabulary: position, position ( director, assistant, …), name of department (marketing, IT,
sales, ), rank in the family (father, mother, sister, …)
• The answers in the form of “I don’t know” are usually correct
• Must listen to all the answers => choose the correct answer

b. When
Common types of responses

✓ A clause indicating time / time: when, not until, as soon as, before, after…

When should I turn on the air conditioner?

• When it reaches 25 degrees.

Advice

• Ask about a timeline, the answer usually has “Prepositions or clauses of time / time.
• Time of answer must match question tense (present, past, future)
• You must understand the structure of the preposition + time / time

c. Where
Common types of responses

✓ Prepositions + location: in my room, at the office …

In: + space, location: in the room, in the park

On + surface: On the table, On the third floor, …

At + specific address / location: At 135 Hill Street, at the meeting, …

Next to + N: Next to the man (next to the man)

Between A and B: Between the bookstore and drug store.

Example: Where was the company picnic held?

At the park next to the lake

✓ Directions / locations: turn left, turn right, opposite the park

Example: Where is the entrance to the parking garage?

• Go straight ahead.

✓ Start with the name of a person / position: Ms. Ha, the accountant …

Where can I find the customers ’phone number?

• The secretary should know.

Advice

• Asking about a place, the answer usually has a preposition of place


• You must understand the structure of the preposition + place
• Focus on listening to both questions and answers carefully

d. Why
Common types of responses

✓ Start with Because, Because of, Since, As + Reason:

For example: Why were you so late this morning?

• Because of the traffic jam.

✓ Do not start with Because, Since, As, …

For example: Why doesn’t the museum open today?

• Discover Monday.

✓ Start with To V

Example: Why did you go to England?

• To study.

Advice

• Usually answer by “because / because of / due to / owning to / as / since / thank to”


• However, many sentences do not have “because”, meaning they are still okay

e. How
Common types of responses

✓ How many / How much: Answer about quantity / money

For example: 50 dollars, 3 chairs

✓ How + be + N: Ask about the nature of N

✓ How can: Ask about how => the answer is a guide

For example: How can I find the bus stop?

• Turn right. It’s in front of ACD school.

✓ How often: Ask about frequency => answers about frequency / frequency

For example: Twice a week (twice a week), Always / often / sometimes /…

Advice: Pay attention to the words often asked with How

Need to distinguish “how long” – the period of time from “when” – the timeline

2. Yes / No question
Common types of responses

✓ Start with Yes / No:

For example: Have you introduced yourself to the new employee?

• No, there’s been busy today today

✓ Do not start with Yes / No:

For example: Will you be checking your e-mail tomorrow?

Advice: Some common words in the answer to remember:

• Sure / Of course
• Why not?
• Yes / No

3. Choice question
Common types of responses

✓ 1 of 2 options is given:

For example: Would you like some tea or some coffee?

• Tea. Thanks!

✓ Do not choose one but offer another:

For example: Are you going out for dinner or staying in?

• I’m going to order delivery.

Advice

1. Frequently asked questions with “or” to choose from.


2. Some fixed answers to selected questions to keep in mind:

• Whichever / Either
• Neither (None at all.)
• Prefer: prefer which one

4. Statement
Common types of responses

✓ Common answers also give their opinions: agree / disagree or neutral.

Example: I was very impressed with Zoey’s singing.

• Yes, she has a wonderful voice.

Advice – Tips Part 2 TOEIC Test Listening

• Give a situation that requires the listener to have a reasonable answer


• Make comments => give an opinion of agreement or opposition
• The more repeated an answer, the more trap it is and the error is likely to be wrong

4. Tag question
Common types of responses

✓ Answer yes / no:

For example: You know her, don’t you?

• No, I don’t know.

✓ Indirect answer without Yes / No:

Example: You set up chairs in the conference room, didn’t you?

• Yes, 200 seats in total

Advice

1. This is the easiest question type in part 2. You only need to select the answer that contains Yes or
No in the answer.
2. Some common words in the answer to remember:

• Sure / Of course
• Why not?
• Yes / No

Common types of responses

✓ Answer yes / no:

For example: Would you like to drink coffee?

• No, thanks. I have to go now.

✓ Answer no Yes / No:

For example: Would you like to walk to the convention center? (Do you want to walk to the
convention center?)

Advice

This is a suggested question that can start with:

• Why don’t you / we + V (infi)


• How about + V (ing)
• Let’s + v (infi)

The note when practicing

• Learn and remember the types of questions and answers corresponding to each type of question.
• Listen carefully to the question at the first word to determine the type of question.
• Listen to the answers and use the exclusion method to choose the correct answers.
• For beginners, the spelling method as I shared in part 1 can still be applied effectively to increase the
ability to hear correctly.
